Misfit Hey, don't forget to add some of your own books to the list, I'm looking for reading ideas :)

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) It's a great list, but what are Dawkins's "God Delusion" and Hitchens's "God Is Not Great" doing here?

message 3: by Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) (last edited Feb 24, 2012 12:58AM) (new)

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Deleted: Eleanor of Aquitaine: A Life and Queen Isabella: Treachery, Adultery, and Murder in Medieval England. Great books, but both NONfiction.

ETA: Also, what am I not remembering about Kristin Lavransdatter, Part 1: The Wreath that makes this (or any of the Kristin Lavransdatter books, for that matter) eligible for inclusion in this list?

Away with the Bridal Wreath - chop chop chop haha

message 5: by Bettie (new)

Bettie The Time Traveler's Guide to Medieval England: A Handbook for Visitors to the Fourteenth Century needs to go too - it is a non-fiction social history. It is just the title that invites you to step back to that time.

message 7: by Bettie (new)

Bettie well done T.A
:O)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads The Conquering Family (44), The Magnificent Century (62), and The Last Plantagenets (65) should all go, too - they are all (highly readable) non-fiction.

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Done. (Double sigh.)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Alison Weir's book about Katherine Swynford (31), is, I think, also non-fiction.

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) So it is. (Triple sigh.)

message 13: by Marieli (new)

Marieli Kristin Lavransdatter's trilogy take's place in Norway, this list is for the England of the Plantagenets-Henry the II to Richard the III. A 300 year period in English history. Lots of story potential!

message 14: by Annika (new)

Annika #102 "The Wars of the Roses" by Alison Weir is non-fiction, so I guess it shouldn't be on this list.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Removed for being non-fiction:

The Wars of the Roses, by Alison Weir

message 16: by Bettie (new)

Bettie I love Sansom but his historical novels are set in Tudor times not Plantagenet and his Dominion is WWII

And The Help? SRSLY!

Thanks Brazilliant, it was bugging the heck out of me!

message 19: by Laura (new)

Laura The same here!!

message 20: by Misfit (new)

Misfit What are A Respectable Trade and The Sealed Letter doing on this list? Also, aren't the Shardlake books Tudor era?

As the list creator, I asked for historical fiction novels, not plays, I.e. Shakespeare.

And the Tim Vicary novel set in 1914?

message 21: by Laura (new)

Laura People just add books without looking for the list's criteria.

message 22: by Misfit (new)

Misfit Laura wrote: "People just add books without looking for the list's criteria."

Yep. I plan on removing them unless someone comes by and let's us know why these books are appropriate for this list.

Axe 'em Misfit - anything that does not fit your written criteria, although I am sticking up for, chest heaving for, inclusion of certain plays that sometimes have more 'detail/bring to life' quota than any novel.

message 24: by Misfit (new)

Misfit I'll leave the Shakespeare, but the others need to go. I think I might tighten up the description for clarification.

message 25: by Misfit (new)

Misfit The Dragon Waiting is fantasy, not historical fiction.

Does anyone know about the Coulter medieval series voted for here? I'm ok with romances if they do feature a plantagenet family member, but not just because it's a medieval setting.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I read at least one of them dog's years ago, and recall no Plantagenets.

Misfit Susanna - Censored by GoodReads wrote: "I read at least one of them dog's years ago, and recall no Plantagenets."

Thank you. I'm going to ask about them about at the Bodice Rippers Anon group and see if anyone can clarify for us.

message 28: by Ivana (new)

Ivana Ann Wroe's "The Perfect Prince: The Mystery of Perkin Warbeck" is non-fiction.

message 29: by Laura (new)

Laura Ivana wrote: "Ann Wroe's "The Perfect Prince: The Mystery of Perkin Warbeck" is non-fiction."

Book #210 removed, thanks Ivana.

message 30: by Terelyn (new)

Terelyn Marks Jackboot Britain does not fit the category, at all!

message 31: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Aug 07, 2015 01:48PM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Agreed; will remove Jackboot Britain. Whose author likes to add it to lots of lists where it doesn't really belong.

message 32: by Misfit (new)

Misfit Susanna - Censored by GoodReads wrote: "Agreed; will remove Jackboot Britain. Whose author likes to add it to lots of lists where it doesn't really belong."

Thank you. I was busy working at work today and hadn't a chance to look.

message 33: by Ivana (new)

Ivana Although I haven't read it, the synopsis of "The Last English King" by Julian Rathbone makes it pretty clear it has nothing to do with House Plantagenet, since it's about king Harold II (Harold Godwinson) and the Norman conquest.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Where did you see it on the list, Ivana?

message 35: by Ivana (new)

Ivana Susanna - Censored by GoodReads wrote: "Where did you see it on the list, Ivana?"

Number 151.

message 37: by Shirley (new)

Shirley Hi I am new to this and have been reading through this blog. Can someone explain the "fine line" between fiction and non fiction in this genre. I notice that a couple of books by Alison Weir have been classed as non fiction War of Roses and the story of Katherine Swynford and removed. Phillips Gregory's novels are here as fiction. Is it the way they are written (PG's books in the 1st person perhaps) ??
