namericanwordcat Lord of Fire (Knight Miscellany Series #2). I didn't think of her as plain. Her sister in law is jealous of her. She is uptight but plain?

message 2: by Hanae (new)

Hanae you are absolutely right!

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Removed Lord of Fire.

Btw, I suppose Jane Eyre wouldn't qualify, either, on the grounds that Rochester isn't exactly Prince Charming himself?

message 4: by Hanae (last edited Jul 05, 2012 08:26AM) (new)

Hanae nope :-) The Stud in question has to be ridiculously attractive, sizzling hot, etc. As much as I love Rochester, he wasn't exactly a stud material (unless he looked like Michael Fassbender)

message 5: by Hanae (new)

Hanae removed books by Elizabeth Gaskell, Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott and Anne Bishop - these are not "romance novels".
This list is about contemporary romance books, may it be modern or historicals. Austen, Alcott and Gaskell are 19th century classics; Bishop writes fantasy.

Love this list - I'm using it to search out new authors and then hassle my local library :)

message 7: by Hanae (new)

Hanae I'm happy to hear it and I'm constantly adding new books to our list.

message 8: by Hanae (last edited Jan 15, 2014 04:50AM) (new)

Hanae I had to remove four books by Amanda Quick and three by Cassie Edwards - the heroines were clearly described as beauties, there was nothing plain about them

message 9: by Hanae (new)

Hanae I have read "Wicked Intentions" and the heroine was no plain Jane - she had been even described as the "beauty of the family". Since ten people voted for this book, I want to ask you if I should remove the book or not. Technically, it does not qualify for our list. What do you think?

message 10: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I haven't read it but I would assume that Plain jane = Plain Jane? I would vote for it being taken off :)

message 11: by Hanae (new)

Hanae done and done!

message 12: by Hanae (last edited Jan 31, 2014 10:12AM) (new)

Hanae a useful tip: check out the new historicals from no. 100 upwards - I'm constantly adding new releases which haven't been rated that often but there is plenty of good stuff waiting for you on the second paige of this list!
I strongly recommend books by Julie Anne Long, Melody Thomas (the title is very misleading), Sherry Thomas, Meredith Duran, Tessa Dare and Elizabeth Hoyt. Read them, love them, vote for them!

message 13: by JG (new)

JG 'Can you keep a Secret' should NOT be here. She's not plain!

message 14: by Hanae (new)

Hanae let's remove her then :-)

message 15: by Hanae (new)

Hanae has anyone read the books by Cassie Edwards added to this list some time ago? Judging by their synopsis, they don't sound like Plain Jane stories to me.

message 16: by Hanae (new)

Hanae removed Susan Enoch's "London's Perfect Scoundrel". The heroine was described as a beauty and a "social butterfly" - no Plain Jane here, ladies and gentlemen.

message 17: by Bespectacledreader (last edited Jul 09, 2016 07:52PM) (new)

Bespectacledreader The Chief by Monica McCarty does not have a plain Jane. Christina is viewed as a beauty. Even the Highland guards keeps on comparing women to her beauty. She is like a standard to them.

message 18: by Hanae (new)

Hanae Thank you for noticing! I'll remove this book from the list.

message 19: by BookLovingLady (last edited Jun 23, 2017 11:50PM) (new)

BookLovingLady I'm not sure any of Georgette Heyer's books should be on here.... They've never struck me as having a hero who's 'stud material', to quote Hanae :-)

message 20: by Hanae (new)

Hanae Booklovinglady wrote: "I'm not sure any of Georgette Heyer's books should be on here.... They've never struck me as having a hero who's 'stud material', to quote Hanae :-)"

I haven't read any of them. We need more feedback before we remove them. Does anyone else think that Heyer's heroes are not studly enough?

message 21: by ☽ Rhiannon ✭ (new)

☽ Rhiannon ✭ Mistwalker ☾ Sooooo many of these books do not have plain heroines in them! I've read several book descriptions on this list that specifically say the heroine is beautiful! Man, going through this to find a new plain heroine book to read was a big waste of time :(

message 22: by Hanae (last edited Jan 21, 2018 11:01AM) (new)

Hanae Could you name these books? It would help us to improve the list.

Besides, the descriptions are often very, very misleading. I've noticed it too. The heroine is described as beautiful on the cover but when you start reading the book, it is clear from the beginning that she is average-looking.

I can vouch for most of the books on page 1.
I haven't read all of the books mentioned on the list but those added by me are 100% legit since it is my favourite trope :-)

message 23: by MyleneBooks (new)

MyleneBooks Hello! I think that “Not another bad date” from Rachel Gisbson shouldn’t be on this list. The heroine is definitely not plain ! She is described as being pretty throughout all the book.
