Goodreads Choice Awards 2019 (eligible for write-in only)

Please add any books that will be eligible for the 2019 version of the Goodreads Choice Awards.

Books published in the United States in English, including works in translation and other significant rereleases, between November 16, 2018, and November 15, 2019, will be eligible for the 2019 Goodreads Choice Awards.

I created this list to provide a place for people to find and promote eligible books in time for people to read the books before the first round of voting because write-in votes are only allowed during the first week of voting.
It could also be a handy reminder to read any eligible and interesting titles on your shelves before it is too late to vote, but the primary intention of this list is to promote write-in votes.

It's OK to change your mind, you can remove and re-order books at any time.
You can add any eligible books, not only the ones you vote for. I will delete all books that are not eligible, including books that are officially nominated for the first round.

Please read the comments for updates and clarifications.

Donna Davis A Spark of Light is on page 2. I love that book, but it's not eligible. Pub date was Oct 2, 2018.

Jodi Duplication - Daisy Jones & The Six appears on this list at least twice.

I constantly see this book on other lists near the top with the same 3-7 voters. I've found it on lists is absolutely doesn't qualify for as well. (It has been removed many times from other lists).

If you look at the three people that voted on it, they only vote for this book and on any list they can stick it on. They have no other books or real profiles or private with one book.

Either someone is making fake profiles to promote their book and ruin list integrity by trying to make this particular book appear popular when it is in fact not, or it really inspires serious devout devotion to people who have read no other book and then feel the need to open a good reads account and vote for this book on any and every list they can because people just need to know about this one book.

I'm thinking it's the latter and since it's ruining list integrity and qualifies as spam, it should be removed or at least only be allowed one vote instead of 3 from clearly fake profiles.

message 7: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Ok, I see what you mean.

I don't think two extra votes (since I originally added it to the list and only removed my vote when someone else voted for it) makes much difference to this list. I understand it bothers you on a best of list, but this list is only to suggest eligible write-in titles for the goodreads choice awards. If it is an official nomination, it will be deleted anyway.

If the two extra votes (or it gets more only fake votes) makes a big difference (such as making it the first book or causing it to be on the first page instead of the second page) when we get closer to voting, I will delete and re-add it so that it only has one vote.

Hopefully other books will get more votes and it will fall down the list on its own.

Give it 5 minutes. It takes a little for the lists to update after adding. Then try to refresh and see if they are there. It's not an automatic update.

Elgon Williams There is a good deal of sabotage going on with this contest. In one day a particular book has received over 70 low ratings from the same people who have rated other books with 5-star ratings. Someone is gaming the system, my friends, and turning this contest into a farce. Books should be rated on their merits. Leave the troll reviews for Amazon. Check the top 36 ranked in terms of votes and look at the review activity from today alone, and look at the ratings the same folks have given to the books.

People try to game it all the time. They do it with lists as well. You will see 5 people with no books / friends voting for the same book with 100 ratings to move it to the top of a list.

As someone who often utilizes the lists to pick my next book it can be very frustrating. I often move certain spammed books to my "Never going to read" list because I refuse to support an author with zero integrity that is trying to falsely inflate the popularity of their book.

Makes you feel all those accounts should be banned or at least suspended until verification or something.

That's why I always click on books in a list I think sound promising. I'll go through the blurb and then read everyone's reviews. Takes more time but it's how I usually pick out the winners that I enjoy instead of the duds.

message 22: by Jade (new)

Jade Violet I'm a google addict. So I look randomly look up stuff. Statistica says Goodreads has 85 million members. Goodreads says it has 90 million. Either one is a huge number, I think it's probably hard to monitor all the accounts when you're dealing with those sort of numbers.

I definitely check out reviews as well. I will also look at the overall popularity of a book and take it into consideration. Like if a book has 100K + Ratings it's generally worth considering. But if a book as only 100 ratings, than I know I'm taking a risk of wasting a few hours on it.

Though, one of my favorite series, Onyx Webb: Book One, has under 500 ratings! And I've read many books that have well over 100K ratings that were complete garbage. So, it's not necessarily the best indicator, but MOST of the time popular books that are in genre's I enjoy seem to be good and books with no popularity with low ratings seem to be trash. (Though my series, Onyx Webb, does have high star reviews, just not a popular book).

I just like lists because you can look up certain tropes or moods. If I want to read a romance with a barbarian trope there are so many lists that cover that. If I want a YA that's tame and non-dystopian, there are lists that cover that. Interesting magic system? There's a list for that! So when people mess with list integrity I get super annoyed because I read reviews for books that have nothing to do with the list topic or I think it's going to be epic because it's on the top of every list and then realize it's trash.

That's why they make the "not interested in" shelf. Only read the reviews of a book once and as soon as I see it's a spam book or the reviews are low, or the synopsis is not my cup of tea, I never have to bother with it again.

/good reads vent over

I think there are systems that can automatically track things. I know a lot of websites have autogenerated flags for accounts. Like if an account has under 10 books on their shelves and it's voted on 10 + Lists it could be flagged or an e-mail sent requiring verification before allowing more votes to be posted. Most fake accounts don't check their e-mail so it would be effectively disabled.

Not sure if Goodreads has the budget to instill automatic checks though. Just have to rely on the librarians to remove trash from lists and keep everything up to date.

Yes, I thought of Instagram when I first read this thread. But then I thought how Instagram's up there with 1 billion people using it worldwide and I'm sure they've got the money flowing in to go nuts. Thus the algorithms and the instant shutdowns. Also, since Amazon bought GR, I think it's really been tailored more to their business model than before and they might be more concerned with the potential purchase gains than policing like other social networks do.

I didn't know that Amazon bought it.

Fascinating that Librarians on this site are still volunteers for updating and monitoring lists. I'm surprised they don't get paid *something* for their time. Not like Amazon is lacking in the funds to pay someone to keep a website up to date and user friendly. Particularly when I know this website probably increases their profits as many of the millions of users use the links to get books and the first link is directly to Amazon.

Free Labor right there.

I think that's exactly why Amazon bought it. They started off with a site called Shelfari like a decade ago. I think Goodreads was first started in 2007 by this guy that had the idea of making a site where he and his friends could see what each other were reading and what their opinions were on the books. Plus recommend stuff to each other. When Amazon bought it, he walked off with a healthy sum and I think at first they still had Shelfari but then they cut it out completely and transferred everything to Goodreads. The potential for publishers, authors and the direct link back to Amazon was definitely a marketing idea to increase profits. I mean you can link you Amazon kindle account straight to GR's if you want to.

As for funds, hell yeah, Jeff Bezos has the cash. But unlike Instagram where they're not selling actual product and thus want to keep a legitimacy to followers and what not as a social app only, I don't think Amazon has ever kicked in the same value system. You see a book you think you want to read, you hit link to buy and boom, you're usually on Amazon. And right now, I think Amazon fixates on that more than the 'integrity' of voting lists and ratings. Plus you can't buy followers here. Maybe one day it'll change.

What contest? Do you just mean this list? This list is not a contest, no one wins anything and it is fine for authors to promote it to their fans. There are no requirements as to who can vote on this list. I just wish people would stick to eligible books.

Sorry I am replying so late, gr didn't send me an email like it used to.

The rules say, "Books published in the United States in English, including works in translation and other significant rereleases, between November 16, 2018, and November 15, 2019, are eligible for the 2019 Goodreads Choice Awards."

But, if they were printed and distributed in the U.S,, that probably still counts. Maybe if you can give me some examples we can figure it out.

The US thing is just for the awards, books and authors from all over the world can be on the site. Look at the bottom of this page and click on the word Authors under the heading Work With Us for more information. If your book isn't already on goodreads, go ahead and add it, then you can claim your author profile.
