The International Booker Prize: Eligible Books 2020

This list presumes that the Booker International prize runs in 2020 and will consider works of translated fiction by living authors, first published in the UK, by a UK publishing house, between 1 May 2019 and 30 April 2020, and follows the same rules as the previous year. Please do not add books that are clearly ineligible under the prize rules and that are not to be published between those dates.

Please note that voting on this list has no bearing on the official prize.

Other years' lists:
The International Booker Prize Eligible Books 2021
Man Booker International Prize Eligible Books 2019
Man Booker International Prize Eligible Books 2018
Man Booker International Prize Eligible Books 2017
Man Booker International Prize Eligible Books 2016

If adding a title to this list, please bear in mind:
- Author and translator must be alive at the time of the prize.
- No retranslations, or reprints of translations previously published in Britain.
- Publisher must have its "principal place of business" in the UK and issue the book with a UK ISBN. (The translation may have been released earlier in other English-speaking countries, but never previously issued by any British publisher.)

The full official rules for the prize can be read here in a PDF on the Booker Prize site.

Please try to add an English language edition where possible.

Thanks.

Paul Fulcher Incidentally Fitzcarraldo tell me:
- Book of Jacob will be a 2020 books (so 2021 eligible)
- their next translated work in 2019 after Vivian will be The Falls by Carlos Manuel Álvarez
- but in any case their Autumn catalogue will be out soon when this will all be set out

message 3: by Antonomasia (new)

Antonomasia Cheers. Books of Jacob is currently down on Amazon as March 2020 release. Looks like a really quick translation for Álvarez if that was first published in Spanish in 2018.

message 4: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher Yes I thought same - but can't see another novel by him and Fitzcarraldo definitely have the rights to it - see http://www.indentagency.com/los-cados

message 5: by Antonomasia (new)

Antonomasia And caídos does mean fallen ones, so...

message 6: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher Indeed - I'd read it as 'cados' due to the URL of the link.

message 7: by Antonomasia (new)

Antonomasia Removed The German Room by Carla Maliandi, as that was eligible for the 2019 prize.

message 8: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher Some to keep an eye on - probably best to wait till they all appear in publishers' catalogues, but most look as if they should fall in 2020 eligibility

Antonomasia Cheers. These PEN lists are always interesting. Will need to sift out poetry, non-fiction, children's books, deceased authors. The books often seem to be published a while after the dates given in these.

Charco have done very well this time.

Alinarka’s Children by Alhierd Bacharevic, translated from the Belarusian by Jim Dingley. Scotland Street Press, June 2019. Country of origin: Belarus.
(Don't think this is out this month as no info on publisher site/Amazon. Author is known as a novelist and is alive.)

God 99 by Hassan Blasim, translated from the Arabic by Jonathan Wright. Comma Press, January 2020. Country of origin: Iraq.
(Amazon gives release date into following prize season, is on the 2021 list)

Crossroads and Lampposts by Trần Dần, translated from the Vietnamese by David Payne. Oneworld Books, September 2020. Country of origin: Vietnam.
(deaceased author. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trần_Dần
Vietnamese Wiki put into Google translate shows this is a novel from 1964 first pub there in 2010, original title Những ngã tư và những cột đèn )

Exodus by Benjamin Fondane, translated from the French by Henry King and Andrew Rubens. Carcanet Press, Autumn 2019. Country of origin: Romania.
(Fondane is deceased and was a poet)

Chaophony by Franketienne, translated from the French by Andres Naffis-Sahely. Carcanet Press, Autumn 2019. Country of origin: Haiti.
(Might count as non-fiction - it's in the form of a letter to his son)

First They Erased Our Names: A Rohingya Speaks by Habiburahman and Sophie Ansel, translated from the French by Andrea Reece. Scribe, August 2019. Country of origin: Australia/Myanmar.
(non-fiction)

Lake Like A Mirror by Ho Sok Fong, translated from the Chinese by Natascha Bruce. Granta Books, January 2010. Country of origin: Malaysia.
(already on this list)

A Little Body Are Many Parts by Legna Rodriguez Iglesias, translated from the Spanish by Abigail Parry and Serafina Vick. The Poetry Translation Centre, October 2019. Country of origin: Cuba.
(poetry)

Theatre of War by Andrea Jeftanovic, translated from the Spanish by Thomas Bunstead. Charco Press, January 2020. Country of origin: Chile.
(publication pushed back, on 2021 list)

Felix and His Suitcase by Dunja Jogan, translated from the Slovenian by Olivia Hellewell. Tiny Owl, May 2020. Country of origin: Slovenia.
(Tiny Owl is a children's press)

The Past Is an Imperfect Tense by Bernardo Kucinski, translated from the Portuguese by Tom Gatehouse. Latin American Bureau, November 2019. Country of origin: Brazil.
(novel by living author, will add; publisher's website now says target pub date Feb 2020)

Loop by Brenda Lozano, translated from the Spanish by Annie McDermott. Charco Press, November 2019. Country of origin: Mexico.
(already on this list)

Holiday Heart by Margarita Garcia Robayo, translated from the Spanish by Charlotte Coombe. Charco Press, May 2020. Country of origin: Colombia.
(fiction by living author, on 2021 list)

The Town with the Acacia Tree by Mihail Sebastian, translated from the Romanian by Gabi Reigh. Aurora Metro, September 2019. Country of origin: Romania.
(deceased author)

Minor Detail by Adania Shibli, translated from the Arabic by Elisabeth Jaquette. Fitzcarraldo Editions, May 2020. Country of origin: Germany/Palestine.
(living author, fiction writer, on 2021 list)

Yezet by various, translated from the Burmese by Alfred Birnbaum. Strangers Press, November 2019. Country of origin: Myanmar.
(sounds like an anthology so not eligible)

Hard Like Water by Yan Lianke, translated from the Chinese by Carlos Rojas. Chatto & Windus, February 2020. Country of origin: China.
(novel by living author, not yet on Amazon)
C&W are publishing a memoir by Lianke, called Three Brothers, in March - guessing this is probably the same book re-titled.

Antonomasia Alinarka's Children is scheduled for June 2020: https://twitter.com/ScotStreetPress/s...

Antonomasia The Doll by Kadare 9781787300934 seems to be a memoir not a novel
