Hugh I hope George RR Martin is a joke but after Snap who knows!

Laff Gun Island seems to have been listed twice.

Antonomasia Laff wrote: "Gun Island seems to have been listed twice."

Sorted now.

All Among the Barley was published in August 2018, so it was eligible for last year's Booker, not this year's.

Calvin Hugh wrote: "I hope George RR Martin is a joke but after Snap who knows!"

It's only a joke in that it won't be published in time for the 2025 Booker, let alone the 2019 one.

message 5: by Hugh (new)

Hugh I have deleted All Among the Barley - as Antonomasia says @2 above it was eligible for 2018.

message 6: by SigurSof (new)

SigurSof Is it possible that Summer of My Amazing Luck by Miriam Toews is being published in the UK for the first time? That would be weird, seeing a 1996 book on the list!

Doug SigurSof wrote: "Is it possible that Summer of My Amazing Luck by Miriam Toews is being published in the UK for the first time? That would be weird, seeing a 1996 book on the list!"

You are correct, this is merely a reprint of the earlier edition: Hugh and/or Antonomasia, could you please remove? And since there is no publication date for # 86 (The Winds of Winter), that might as well be removed as well. Thanx.

The book only needs to be published in the UK or Ireland for the first time. If this is the first such publication it should stay on the list.

message 9: by Antonomasia (new)

Antonomasia From the "Fiction" section of Faber & Faber's July-Dec 2019 New Books catalogue: "Miriam Toews' heartbreaking and funny debut novel, published in the UK for the first time".
https://issuu.com/faberandfaber/docs/...
page6/7 in Issu numbering, page 8 of the scan.

message 10: by Doug (new)

Doug Sorry, was under the impression Counterpoint was a UK press... let it stay! :-)

message 11: by Antonomasia (last edited Jun 12, 2019 08:32AM) (new)

Antonomasia Turns out We Cast a Shadow doesn't have a UK publisher yet. Some of us had assumed it was with the same Oneworld Publications that published The Sellout in the UK, but it's not, it's One World, a US imprint of PRH.

Thanks for keeping us on our toes! Can the person who nominated it (Ella) or someone with librarian status remove it then (even though I created the list, I don't have admin privileges to do so, since I am NOT a librarian! :-( ).

message 13: by Marchpane (new)

Marchpane Re Summer of My Amazing Luck:

"The work must be published in the UK or Ireland between 1 October 2018 and 30 September 2019.
If it has previously been published outside the UK and Ireland it will only be eligible if the original date of publication outside the UK and Ireland is within the previous two years, ie not earlier than 1 October 2016"

From the eligibility rules here: https://thebookerprizes.com/sites/man...

message 14: by Antonomasia (new)

Antonomasia Thanks for pointing that out.

message 15: by Doug (last edited Jun 20, 2019 10:55AM) (new)

Doug Another problematic entry - the edition of Olive, Again at position 127 is by Viking, an American imprint, and there doesn't appear to be a UK press publication slated as yet, so would seem to be ineligible for this year.

I have started a new Booker Prize Eligibility 2020 list and added it there, in the presumption there will be a UK edition sometime after the deadline. Can someone with librarian privileges remove it from this list? Thanx. And do start adding any UK publications slated for after Sept. 30 to the new list :-)

message 16: by Antonomasia (new)

Antonomasia That's a UK edition, see here for example: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Olive-Again-...
Viking has been the hardback imprint of some Penguin titles for as long as I can remember here. (Wikipedia check shows that's because it was bought by Penguin in 1975.)

The US edition is the dark blue Random House one that says "A Novel" on the cover. UK editions rarely use that.

message 17: by Antonomasia (new)

Antonomasia Thanks for setting up the next list

message 18: by Doug (new)

Doug Although AVAILABLE in the UK, I still don't think this counts as a UK publication since it is by Viking, An AMERICAN company: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viking_...], operating out of NY. But I could be wrong ... the rules are a bit confusing, but it does indicate: "the imprint has its principal place of business in the UK" (under rules 1b.).

message 19: by Doug (new)

Doug ... and can someone more savvy determine the eligibility of Deb Levy's The Man Who Saw Everything; no one has nominated it yet, but I don't think it's eligible till 2020 either...

message 20: by Antonomasia (last edited Jun 20, 2019 09:50AM) (new)

Antonomasia Here it is on the UK Penguin website: https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/30966...

And if, here, you look at the 'Penguin General' catalogue, you will find it too (p.18 though searching for the word Olive is quicker):
https://www.penguin.co.uk/company/con...

https://www.penguin.co.uk/company/pub...
https://twitter.com/VikingBooksUK

When I was younger they were even sometimes referred to as Viking-Penguin the way they might now be called PRH (this is largely pre-internet so can't easily find examples.)

The Hamish Hamilton edition for The Man Who Saw Everything is the UK one and that's scheduled for 29th August. (You can find it on p.13 of the same catalogue, or search Levy). The US edition is the Bloomsbury one for 15th Oct. i.e. pub date of 29 Aug makes it eligible in 2019

message 21: by Doug (new)

Doug Thanks for the clarification - I suppose even though the PARENT company is American, UK Penguin counts as an independent imprint. And I've added the Levy to this list.

message 22: by Doug (new)

Doug Frankissstein is on here twice at # 50 and 97. :-(

message 23: by Antonomasia (new)

Antonomasia Not any more :)

message 24: by Doug (last edited Jul 11, 2019 01:07PM) (new)

Doug Antonomasia wrote: "Not any more :)"

Gracias! :-)

And while I have you here (since you are the eligibility expert!) is Freshwater, currently at # 2 even eligible? It WAS on last year's list, and there appear to be UK editions prior to this year's cut off dates...

message 25: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher We discussed this back in August and didn't reach a view I think as the official Uk date seems to be 1 November 2018
(https://www.faber.co.uk/9780571345397...) although the ebook seemed to come out before (1 March 2018)

message 26: by Antonomasia (new)

Antonomasia Yes, until the Booker rules make a clear statement about titles that are published in one eligibility year as an ebook, and the next year on paper, it's too difficult to say.

So far there hasn't been a case where one of these books was longlisted in the later year when it was published on paper, and that may or may not be meaningful. (i.e. Perhaps these books are eligible when they are published as ebooks, and the paper copies are then rushed out earlier because of Booker listing.)

If Freshwater is longlisted this year, that may provide an general answer that could be applied to other books.

message 27: by Doug (new)

Doug Thanx for the clarification. Of course, if it ISN'T longlisted, we're back to square one, since we don't know if that was because it was indeed ineligible - or the judges just didn't care for it! :-(

message 28: by Val (new)

Val I have added Praise Song for the Butterflies, Remembered, An American Marriage and The Friend. I think they all qualify on UK publication date.

message 29: by David (new)

David Val wrote: "I have added Praise Song for the Butterflies, Remembered, An American Marriage and The Friend. I think they all qualify on UK publica..."

An American Marriage isn't eligible because it was published in the UK around March 2018? I have a feeling Praise Song for the Butterflies just missed the cutoff too, but I may be wrong.

message 30: by Val (last edited Jul 18, 2019 11:42AM) (new)

Val I have 1st October 2018 for Praise Song.
I wasn't sure which of the dates for American Marriage were UK ones, so you are probably right and I will remove my vote for it.
Does that remove the book?
If not, will someone who can remove it do so please.

message 31: by Doug (new)

Doug It's sometimes REALLY difficult to ascertain what constitutes a UK edition - esp. when there are UK imprints that are actually part of a US publishing house. As a rule of thumb, I tend to look at the listings at Books Depository UK, as they usually indicate WHERE the publication stemmed from in their book listings...

message 32: by Antonomasia (new)

Antonomasia Catalogues can often help. In this instance the Jul-Dec 2018 Oneworld catalogue shows American Marriage as published in hardback in April 2018: https://oneworld-publications.com/med...
(page 10)

But Jacaranda, publisher of Praise Song, is one of those small publishers which doesn't always keep its website up to date. Amazon now has a pub date of 31 Jan 2019 for the hardback listed on GR as Oct 2018. Either date makes it eligible so at least there isn't that confusion
