message 1: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea I don't think a lot of these books qualify as a "dystopian society" books...

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

WTF is dystopian about the Time Traveler's Wife?

message 3: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Lowe Wow, I can't believe the "Gone" series by Michael Grant was missing from this list.

message 4: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Or The Handmaid's Tale. Maybe that doesn't count as "young" adult ???

message 5: by Randi (new)

Randi Cassandra Clare's books, much as I love them, are NOT dystopia...

message 6: by Emily (new)

Emily Randi wrote: "Cassandra Clare's books, much as I love them, are NOT dystopia..."

Totally agree!

message 7: by Josiane (last edited Jan 17, 2013 08:24PM) (new)

Josiane Claremont Randi wrote: "Cassandra Clare's books, much as I love them, are NOT dystopia..."

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that if the plot takes place in NEW YORK CITY with WORKING VEHICLES, then it IS NOT dystopian

message 8: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie Since when is Memoirs of a Geisha dystopian?

message 9: by Jack (new)

Jack If you enjoy the dystopian genre, you should join The YA Dystopian Book Club

message 10: by Farah 🌈 (new)

Farah 🌈 Wait, how is The Mortal Instruments dystopian?! They're paranormal/fantasy.

message 11: by Ellinor (new)

Ellinor Frankenstein, The Canterville Ghost, Les Miserables, The Picture of Dorian Gray and the Chronicles all aren't Dystopian and shouldn't be on this list.

message 12: by Stacey (new)

Stacey so many awesome books on this list

message 13: by Dana (new)

Dana Lynne wrote: "Wow, I can't believe the "Gone" series by Michael Grant was missing from this list."

message 14: by Shelby (last edited Jun 19, 2013 09:30AM) (new)

Shelby These are good books, but they all aren't dystopian.... the only ones are the hunger games, divergent, and partials (that i know and have read)

message 15: by Olivia (new)

Olivia is Cinder by Marissa Meyer on the list? I didn't see it...

message 16: by Sarah (new)

Sarah El Issa Emily wrote: "Randi wrote: "Cassandra Clare's books, much as I love them, are NOT dystopia..."

Totally agree!"

I disagree because a dystopia is a creation of a nightmare world and even though it is set in New York , a world with people killing demons is a nightmare. Dystopia is often characterized by an authoritarian or totalitarian form of government ,like the clave because they don't always listen to the other shadow hunters .But everyone has different opinions :)

message 17: by Dana (new)

Dana Olivia wrote: "is Cinder by Marissa Meyer on the list? I didn't see it..."

message 21: by Yaa (new)

Yaa Some of these books should be classified as dystopian. The mortal instruments for example.

Lauraelisabeth (fashion-by-the-book) I'm beginning to think a lot of people don't know what Dystopian means...

message 23: by Rachel (new)

Rachel House of Scorpions by Nancy Farmer. Actually dystopian, and really good.

message 24: by Cheyenne (new)

Cheyenne Autumn Lynne wrote: "Wow, I can't believe the "Gone" series by Michael Grant was missing from this list."

message 25: by Taysia (new)

It wasn't. It's up ther

message 29: by Avaminn (new)

Avaminn F'nett Graceling is epic fantasy, not dystopian - how is it so high on the list?
Gone is more sci-fi/horror than dystopian.
The Iron Fey is probably considered urban fantasy - definitely NOT dystopian.
Scorpio Races is fantasy.
Mortal Instruments is urban fantasy.
Infernal Devices is HISTORICAL urban fantasy.
Gregor the Overlander is fantasy.
The Lightning Thief is mythological fantasy.
Hush, Hush is paranormal romance.
Mortal Engines is Steampunk.
Fire and Thorns is a fantasy romance.
The Perks of being a Wallflower is realistic YA.
The Future of Us is science fiction set in modern day.
Throne of Glass is epic fantasy/romance.
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is paranormal fantasy.
Panic is realistic YA.
The Spook's Apprentice is fantasy.
Shadow and Bone is fantasy.
Game of Thrones is not only epic medieval fantasy, but also is not YA.
I Am Number Four is science fiction.

There are probably more I am missing, but none of these belong on the list.

message 30: by Avaminn (new)

Avaminn F'nett Lynne wrote: "Wow, I can't believe the "Gone" series by Michael Grant was missing from this list."

It is on the list. It also, despite being a wonderful series, is not dystopian.

V. A Court of Wings and Ruin is NEW ADULT/EROTICA but Goodreads editors won't tell you to include it in the choice awards *Face palm
Why do people vote for paranormal romances? It's dystopian list! Hush hush? really?

message 32: by Logan (new)

Logan Keys Thanks for the votes!!!

message 33: by Andie (new)

Andie Not entirely sure if some of these fully qualify as dystopian, but okay.

message 34: by Cindy (last edited Feb 29, 2016 12:19PM) (new)

Cindy There are quite a lot of books that aren't dystopian at all (The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices, Graceling, ...) My heart is bleeding because they're my favorite books and yet I won't vote for them in a dystopian list.

Rosa The Lightning Thief isn't dystopian or futuristic.

message 38: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Just to add to all the rage....there is seriously something wrong with this list...

message 39: by SparksofEmber (new)

SparksofEmber Removed the Cassandra Clare books, Pretty Little Liars, Rick Riordan's books, Wool (not YA), Hush Hush, Caster Chronicles, Game of Thrones (not YA), The Fault In Our Stars, the "I Am Number Four" series, the Handmaid's Tale & other Atwoods (not YA), Indiana Jones (really?), The Time Traveler's Wife, the Lying Game books, the Boy in the Striped Pajamas, the Defy series, the Iron Fey series, the Scorpio Races, the Underland Chronicles, The Perks of being a Wallflower, the Graceling series, New England Witch Chronicles, the Shadow & Bone series, the Monster Club series, Torment of Shadows, The Future of Us, Panic, The Wasteland Chronicles (Post-Apocalyptic, not dystopian), The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, The Last Apprentice/Wardstone Chronicles series, Throne of Glass series, Looking for Alaska and a few other books by John Green that are not dystopian, Tried to remove duplicates but there's a known glitch causing issues. I reported it to Goodreads.

message 40: by Enkhdari (new)

Enkhdari Some of these books don't really fit into the genre dystopian to be honest.

message 41: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Carter In the Fullness of Time
Absolutely timely book for these days we are in! Loved the main character-futuristic and so suspenseful. I binge read the book and highly recommend it!
