message 1: by Gwendolyn (new)

Gwendolyn Hey, this list is missing Twilight and the DaVinci Code. Those are supposed to be on every list. Come on, guys. Get it together!

message 2: by Andreea (new)

Andreea Gwendolyn wrote: "Hey, this list is missing Twilight and the DaVinci Code. Those are supposed to be on every list. Come on, guys. Get it together!" Possibly because both Twilight and The Da Vinci Code are not on the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die.

message 3: by Christina (new)

Christina What about "the road home" ?? Probably the best book I have ever read. This book made me get away from myevery day life for the few days it took me to read it.
This story took me to a world & a culture I do not know.
Since reading this novel, I have read many from the same author & I have never ever benn disappointed.

message 4: by Frank (new)

Frank O'brien The Poem of the Man God should be here. Not very well known, I know, but compelling. All 5000 (or so) pages of it. From the above list my top 3 would be:
1. The Brothers Karamazov
2. Wuthering Heights
3. Pride and Prejudice
And where, oh where is 'War and Peace'.

Jeff War and Peace was on here Im pretty sure...

Eternaldisturbance I didn't find Fountainhead.
It is without exception-one of the books to be read before you die, and not once but over and over again.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I do not believe it is on the list in question.

message 9: by Katie (new)

Katie It would be interesting to have all 1001 books on the list so that voters could have the whole list to pick their favorite from.

Eternaldisturbance Margaret wrote: "these are all classics, which is fine, but i was looking for a 1001 favorites list that has some interesting ones on it. the lesser known 1001 faves or something. "

hmm.. i dont know abt the 1001 lesser knowns, but i could recommend a few. "Touching the rock" would be one of them-it is one of the best books i have read. and then "Deafening" would be another one. maybe, i'll put together a list one of these days. what are some of yours?

message 11: by Carla (new)

Carla Langston missing some really good modern fiction--where is Stephen King on this list? How about Agatha Christie? Some of these are really good but what about To Kill A Mockingbird?!? Think you guys dropped the ball on this one!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads There are a few Stephen King novels on the list in question. To Kill a Mockingbird is not only on the list, it is at the top of this one.

message 13: by oliviasbooks (last edited Jun 17, 2010 04:38AM) (new)

oliviasbooks Do some of you ignore the description of a listopia list? It is plainly stated, that the list to chose from is fixed (see offered link). If you like books not on that list of 1001 pre-chosen-ones, just start an alternative list. Otherwise each list ends up being just a random list of books people happen to like for different reasons.
Examples for books, that DO NOT BELONG on this list (although they may be great):
The Time Traveller's Wife, The Thief, The Vampire Academy Series, Holes, Water for the Elephants, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Thirteen's Tale, Help and others. If you add titles, you can simple check the linked list first.

message 14: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Drury My vote goes to Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, which is not on this list.

message 15: by oliviasbooks (new)

oliviasbooks Yes, Jenny, it seems that the books you favors has not been mentioned by the author of the 1000-books-book (check link). It consits of his subjective choices anyway. Maybe you can start a list and add it there?

message 16: by Phoenixfalls (new)

Phoenixfalls As far as I can tell, And Then There Were None is not on the list. (Though it's a LONG list, so it's *possible* I missed it.) Can someone remove it?

(I love the book, but it's isn't there!) :(

message 17: by J_BlueFlower (last edited Jun 24, 2011 12:09PM) (new)

J_BlueFlower Book 222 Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race
by Robert A. Wascher should not be here as it is not on the 1001-list.

Also book 202 Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card - the best book ever, and so on - but it is still not on the 1001-list.

message 18: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Storm Hi. My books Farsighted got added to this list but doesn't fit the criteria. I know this is about Boxall's anthology, because I lead a book group that reads exclusively from the list! Please feel free to remove my novel. Thanks :-)

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) Going through this list, I noticed that some books I voted for showed up more than once.
As I have librarian status, I checked for dupicates: There were 21 duplicates in this list! Please, do be a bit careful...

message 20: by BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) (last edited May 18, 2012 09:23AM) (new)

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) Jeff wrote: "War and Peace was on here Im pretty sure..."

War and Peace is still on the list, as it is one of the books I voted for (and I haven't been adding books :-) only deleting duplicates). At the moment it is no. 69.

message 21: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary I have removed a lot of books that are not on the 1001 list, since this list is supposed to be the 'best of' that list.

message 22: by Thom (new)

Thom Dunn I'm putting The Odyssey and Canterbury Tales on my list. If they aren't on the 1001 list....

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads They should be, but they aren't. If it's poetry or drama, it's not on the list. (Neither is Shakespeare.)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Removed, for not being on the original list:

Isn't It Pretty To Think So?

message 25: by Ginger (new)

Ginger Gwendolyn wrote: "Hey, this list is missing Twilight and the DaVinci Code. Those are supposed to be on every list. Come on, guys. Get it together!"

Hehe, I knew we forgot something!

message 26: by Ginger (new)

Ginger Susanna - Censored by GoodReads wrote: "Removed, for not being on the original list:

Isn't It Pretty To Think So?"

Guess we can't blame the author for trying ;)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads He put his book on over 20 pages of Listopias.

message 28: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Tittle No Wallace Stegner? No Lonsome Dove? For shame!

message 29: by Greg (new)

Greg I've read 13 of the top 15. That leaves "Geisha" and "Wrath" to be read soon!

message 30: by Greg (new)

Greg Carla wrote: "missing some really good modern fiction--where is Stephen King on this list? How about Agatha Christie? Some of these are really good but what about To Kill A Mockingbird?!? Think you guys droppe..."
Carla, Christie is here at #143 or so, and rightly so.

message 31: by Tyler (new)

Tyler Cameron I just can't get onboard with Gatsby or Catcher in the Rye... they are just not good from where I stand.

~☆~Autumn♥♥☔ Tyler wrote: "I just can't get onboard with Gatsby or Catcher in the Rye... they are just not good from where I stand."

I sure agree about Gatsby which was required reading for me but I have always liked The Catcher in the Rye. (read it twice) There are a large number of books I would never read even if someone paid me to read them. They are just horrible.

message 33: by Chiara (new)

Chiara Ok, ok, ok. This list is pretty good but it is missing some things:
-The Shadow of the Wind
-The Picture of Dorian Gray
-The Count of Montecristo
(I ac dk if the last two were or weren't in the list, but I'm not gonna search 1001 books to find if they are).

message 34: by Alan (new)

Alan McVicker Yes, you should read these books before you die, because you won't be able to do so after you die.
