Goodreads Choice Awards 2018 (eligible for write-in only)

Please add any books that will be eligible for the 2018 version of the Goodreads Choice Awards.

Books published in the United States in English, including works in translation and other significant rereleases, between November 16, 2017, and November 15, 2018, will be eligible for the 2018 Goodreads Choice Awards.

I created this list to provide a place for people to find and promote eligible books in time for people to read the books before the first round of voting because write-in votes are only allowed during the first week of voting.
It could also be a handy reminder to read any eligible and interesting titles on your shelves before it is too late to vote, but the primary intention of this list is to promote write-in votes.

Yes, I am creating this early so that we don't miss any worthy books. It's especially easy to forget that late November and December books are eligible for the next year's award. It's OK to change your mind, you can remove and re-order books at any time.
You can add any eligible books, not only the ones you vote for. I will delete all books that are not eligible, including books that are officially nominated for the first round.

Please read the comments for updates and clarifications.

Deborah I would appreciate a comment about any books you add that were previously published outside of the US or for any other reason may have an earlier originally published date.

Thanks

Gigi Langer 50 Ways to Worry Less Now: Reject Negative Thinking to Find Peace, Clarity, and Connection

I would like to enter my book in the 2018 contest; published Feb 2018.
I couldn't find info on how to enter it into a specific category.
Perhaps this contest operates differently. Please advise.
Thank you

This isn't the contest. This is just a list for use by people who may vote in the contest. The contest won't start until November and I have no control over it.

No need to apologize! They are adding old books because they won't read your clear instruction. You've set a huge project for yourself here, thank you and good luck!

You can add them, just go to the top of the list and click on the tab that says, "Add Books To This List". It will let you search for a book or select them from your shelves.

Donna Davis Sterling wrote: "I'm so honored that my book, Xenon Phobia, is on this list. I hope you all check it out."

Honored or not, this comment is spam and I have flagged it. If I were you I would remove it before they have the chance to review it, because it's a whopping violation of GR policy, not to mention a waste of librarians' time.

message 23: by Sterling (new)

Sterling Emmal I would love to see where in the GR policy it states that I can not express my deepest of gratitude for being nominated. The statement I posted is synonymous with the phrase 'Thank You,' and I stand by it. If you think that is a waste of time to show gratitude and express your emotions, I am truly sorry you feel that way. May I suggest that you check out a good book instead of reading the comment section and trying to intimidate people on the internet. You might find out that your level of happiness will go up substantially.

Thank you for removing your spam. If you feel my actions were intimidating, feel free to report that. Meanwhile, you may want to hold off on personal attacks, which are also a violation of GR policy.

This thread is generally intended for technical questions or comments that pertain to the list. Volunteer librarians such as me are notified when a comment goes up, and we return here to make corrections to the lists as needed. Most of us prefer not to open a new window for the purpose of hearing an author flag their work. But regardless, GR policy is what it is. It was this way before I arrived, but I support it entirely.

message 31: by Happily Mary (new)

Happily Mary After I feel the list title is misleading and "eligible" should be added. I know it is explained in the list description, but many readers only read the title. When someone shares the list on social media, only the title shows.

Also, many do not realize the difference in Listopia lists and a sanctioned contest. I have even seen authors, who believe their book has been nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award and thanking people.

I encourage you to add "eligible" or "potential". You could also consider "Books I Want to See on Goodreads Choice Awards 2018".

I also wish we could prevent books being added that do not fit the date parameters. I know you probably spend a lot of time removing incorrect ones. (BTW, I can help you do that sometimes. If you want this book on the list, you have to put it there yourself. Go to the top of the list and click on "Add Books To The List", and when you do, a window will come up. Enter your title in that window, then click the button that says "Vote for this book." Neither GR employees nor volunteers like myself add books other than the ones we want to vote for.

Deborah Voting opens with 15 official nominations in each category. You can write in an eligible book in each category, instead of voting for an official nomination only during the first round. The top 5 write-in votes will be added to the official list for the second round. The final round is limited to the top 10 in each category.

Is this a list of every book published during the qualifying period? If not, wouldn't that be the easiest way to go, or is that list in existence? Then, as people read and review these books, a software app would automatically record the scores and votes. In other words, can this process be automated, Deborah? Just curious.

But anyway, the fact that "Darker" (of the 50 Shades) is at 27 already tells me what I already know: the goodreads awards go to known/famous authors. I've noted that in some cases, a book gets more votes than the number of times it was read. Like last year, Tyson's science book won an award probably because he was the only name recognized by most readers, and at the time the award was announced, twice as many people had voted for it than had even read it. And usually, if one cares to statistically analyze the numbers, the winning book/vote counts has 1 or more standard deviations from the norm, indicating non-normal numbers. In other words, the awards have already been determined by whoever is the most famous: Hannah, King, etc.

message 47: by Greg (new)

Greg Mary at wrote: "I feel the list title is misleading and "eligible" should be added. I know it is explained in the list description, but many readers only read the title. When someone shares the list on social medi..."

Mary, good ideas. I think there should simply be an ongoing list of every book published that will qualify, and when it is read and reviewed, that info is automatically transferred to the list.

message 48: by Greg (new)

Greg Sterling wrote: "I would love to see where in the GR policy it states that I can not express my deepest of gratitude for being nominated. The statement I posted is synonymous with the phrase 'Thank You,' and I stan..."

Sterling, unless your name is King or Hannah, it doesn't make much difference anyway. The winner of each award will be the most famous. Period. That's all there is to it. And the winners, I guarantee you, will receive more votes than the number of people who actually read the book. A goodreads award means nothing, other than silly entertainment, like that silly spin thing that was the rage of the month a few months ago.

message 49: by Greg (new)

Greg Is this the chic list books of 2018? I notice most of the covers have shirtless men. (Nothing wrong with that, though!) Can someone point me to a credible list of the best books of 2018?

message 50: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Greg wrote: "Is this a list of every book published during the qualifying period? If not, wouldn't that be the easiest way to go, or is that list in existence?..."

No, of course not. Each person can only vote for 100 books. I seeded it with 100 books and when someone votes for one I added I remove my vote and add another one.

This never claimed to be a best of list. I do wish there were more genres listed in the first few pages. I would like to see nonfiction and picture books. Go to the last few pages in the list and you should find more variety. And you can add books yourself.

This list has no impact on the actual awards, I was trying to give people a resource to help with write-in votes. One of my problems is that you can only vote for one book in each category and most of the books I read will only be in a few categories. Also there are many nonfiction books that I would like to read, but either I forget or don't find out about them until it's too late to read them in time to vote.
