message 1: by Jeremy (new)

Jeremy Lol...many of these book only have one vote by a disgruntled reader.

message 2: by Esmë (new)

Esmë I don't like this list very much. How can you put a masterpiece like Dune with the Twilight books?

message 3: by Jeremy (new)

Jeremy Esmë wrote: "I don't like this list very much. How can you put a masterpiece like Dune with the Twilight books?"

Only 3 people voted for it, compared to about 70 for Twilight.

message 4: by Tnkw01 (new)

Tnkw01 I believe if one looks at authors as well as book titles a pattern starts to form.

message 5: by Jestersinc (new)

Jestersinc Seems like this list is biased and prejudiced against some authors, how does a book qualify as a bad book ? I have some good memories reading some of these books on the list. Yes I do not like the Twilight series, however I do not think they are bad books, because they are commercially successful does not make them bad, my wife thoroughly enjoyed the Twilight series.

I agree, commercial success does not mean a book is "bad". However, I think the Twilight books are "bad" as they are written badly, and the characters lack any depth at all.

message 7: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin ....harry potter is here why??

message 8: by Justin (new)

Justin I agree with all of the above statements. This website is for people who love reading, so maybe a "Best Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Horror, etc." list would be more appropriate.

message 9: by Artemas (new)

Artemas Whoever voted for The Lies of Locke Lamora is an absolute fool.

message 10: by Roseanne (new)

Roseanne Eh, people have different tastes in books... doesn't mean it's a "worst" this list should be deleted and banned and tarred and feathered by the goodreads.com staff.... This is ridiculous...

Agreed. I'm not sure why these people always feel the need to clump Fantasy/Scifi/Horror together anyways. I've yet to see a poll like this for a mashup of Romance/Mystery/Westerns. ;)

message 13: by Artemas (new)

Artemas The Road isn't fantasy, horror, OR scifi. It's a novel.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

I always love to see 50 Shits of Grey in "Worst [whatever]" lists, but seriously, isn't it supposed to be fantasy/sci fi/horror?
It doesn't even fit the genre, people add books without even reading what the list is about.

I'm not quite sure what you mean. You want to ban, tar and feather this user?
If yes, why?

Serves you right for drinking water, Bayaz. Shouldn't you be driking wine right now? :P

I think this person should just stop reading fiction. lol

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't have a problem with her votes and I certainly don't think the solution is to write off an entire genre just because you disliked some books. The "if you don't like this or that book then stop reading this genre" argument is bullshit and a very poor debating tool.
But, I guess that respecting other people's opinions is too much to ask in Good "Troll Land" Reads, no?
Now, probably Lazer's comment was tongue in cheek, I can't tell. But if this Roseanne character actually believes that this user should be banned, tarred and feathered then I suggest she visits a shrink ASAP. She's obviously disturbed.

message 21: by Artemas (new)

Artemas Kelley wrote: "Can we UNvote for certain books on this list? Other than the Comments, is there an outlet for expressing strong disagreement with the appearance of certain books on a list?

Pratchett's "Making Mon..."

What would be the point of removing someone's vote on a list where they are being asked to vote for books they didn't enjoy?

Emma Deplores Goodreads Censorship To #10: I voted for The Lies of Locke Lamora because to me it read as very juvenile, all teen-boy-wish-fulfillment and no substance. Then the only female character of any importance got stuffed in the fridge and I was done. It's obviously a very popular book, but hey, there are books I love on this list too, and Goodreads would be a very boring place if everybody agreed.

message 23: by Özgür (new)

Özgür Deniz Caitlin wrote: "....harry potter is here why??"
Hp is not a good book :|

message 24: by Avaminn (new)

Avaminn F'nett 50 Shades of Grey should not be on here. It may be terrible, but it's not fantasy.

message 25: by Jacob (new)

Jacob Spencer How can you put Harry Potter on here? It's a fucking classic fantasy. Arguably the best fantasy series of all time. Game of Thrones? Why is Game of Thrones on here? It's great too.

message 26: by Jacob (new)

Jacob Spencer Misery? Are you kidding me? This is so ridiculous. A few of these books are actually very good, and no one, I mean no one, sane, can put these books on here. Twilight, I totally agree. It sucks ass, but Misery and Harry Potter...God help this miserable society if people are putting books like that on this list.

message 27: by Jacob (new)

Jacob Spencer You know, I think a lot of these books are those people haven't even read. It's probably a bunch of Twilight fans angry about Stephen King saying Twilight sucks and so they put his masterpieces on this list.

message 28: by Avaminn (new)

Avaminn F'nett Jacob wrote: "How can you put Harry Potter on here? It's a fucking classic fantasy. Arguably the best fantasy series of all time. Game of Thrones? Why is Game of Thrones on here? It's great too."

Harry Potter is very good, but the best of all time? Really? I think it's the best children's fantasy of all time, but not fantasy over all.

message 29: by Jacob (new)

Jacob Spencer Avaminn wrote: "Jacob wrote: "How can you put Harry Potter on here? It's a fucking classic fantasy. Arguably the best fantasy series of all time. Game of Thrones? Why is Game of Thrones on here? It's great to..."

Avaminn, note I said "arguably". That doesn't mean it is, just that it is accepted by a decent chunk as the best.

message 30: by Avaminn (new)

Avaminn F'nett I have to admit, though, that I am surprised Harry Potter is so high up on the list. I did not know that many people disliked it.

message 31: by Avaminn (new)

Avaminn F'nett Avaminn wrote: "50 Shades of Grey should not be on here. It may be terrible, but it's not fantasy."

And it still hasn't been removed...

message 32: by Roseanne (new)

Roseanne It's a list, not truth. Truth is different for different people. Or else we'd be clones and therefore boring. Differences are beautiful... People that make these kinds of lists just like drama-making. And well, I don't feel like partaking, so I have yet to vote. Besides 139 people thinking a book sucks is like a speck of dust on my wine glass; just a flick of the wrist and they're *poof* gone. There's quadrillions of people who enjoy these books, and so what? Do they have bad tastes? NO. They just don't have the same tastes as ... what? 139 people? Right, Like I should care.... 139 people can not even make a dent on the fandom of trillions. Just saying.

message 33: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I don't like this list. I'm all for honest reviews but there are some fantastic books on this list! I also feel strongly that all authors should be encouraged and putting out a "worst books" list is just asking for those who want to rant to do so. No thanks....

message 34: by Simon (last edited Sep 20, 2015 12:21PM) (new)

Simon Yeah this got me fired up. I guess i am an idiot because a lot of these books are some of the best i have ever read.

My opinion. This list. Sucks.

message 35: by Mike (last edited Jun 03, 2016 06:59AM) (new)

Mike Kenny this list should be called "famous fantasy and sci-fi novels that some people don't like." i've read lots of really bad books and none of them are on this list. instead, it has sci-fi classics like dune and the forever war, and incredibly popular fantasy series like harry potter and the wheel of time. i would love to know who came up with this list and what books they think are actually good.

message 36: by K (new)

K @ the one person who voted for Good Omens: fight me.

message 37: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 23, 2018 11:22AM) (new)

Added starship troopers. Military science fiction needs to die already, it's not the forties anymore. (I could add any number of examples of military science fiction, space opera, YA books and paranormal romances; because almost nothing good comes out of those genres [there are exceptions] but I won't)

message 38: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Hayes Justin wrote: "I agree with all of the above statements. This website is for people who love reading, so maybe a "Best Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Horror, etc." list would be more appropriate."

There are plenty of "best" lists. Perhaps one needs a counterbalance.

The rockabilly werewolf from Mars It's a shame most of these are just popular ones that people dislike. I mean, I dislike lots of them; but I was hoping for some really terrible stuff that hardly anyone has read, the sorts of books that languish on the shelves of thrift stores, the sorts of forgotten books that you have to laugh at how terrible they are. I hate Twilight as much as anyone, but I was hoping for something weirder.

message 40: by Tammie (new)

Tammie The rockabilly werewolf from Mars wrote: "It's a shame most of these are just popular ones that people dislike. I mean, I dislike lots of them; but I was hoping for some really terrible stuff that hardly anyone has read, the sorts of books..."

I think Aristoi fits into that category.

The rockabilly werewolf from Mars In particular, if anyone has any particularly terrible horror fiction from the 80s or earlier, I would like to know about it. So far I have Eat Them Alive, Killer Crabs, and The Flying Eyes on my list of terrible horror novels to look for, but I would always appreciate more.
