Anirudh I could not help but notice that Winds of Winter is not on this list

[redacted by S.H.I.E.L.D.] That's because it doesn't have a release date. Also see Doors of Stone.

I was afraid of that

[redacted by S.H.I.E.L.D.] Well, Doors of Stone isn't even started, so I wouldn't expect it in the next 5 years minimum. Winds of Winter...who knows, but I'd bet good money it comes out first.

In one of the interviews he had said he has completed writing all 3 books before the 1st one was even published. Perhaps he is rewriting it now considering the fame the first two books got

[redacted by S.H.I.E.L.D.] Yeah and that interview has been proven to have been a complete lie a billion times over. One of the biggest embarrassments in DAWs history. Plus you can go to his site and watch hm mock people for asking him about progress and have him rub it in fans faces that he plays games instead of writing the third book. So, no, it's not "already written".

message 7: by [redacted by S.H.I.E.L.D.] (last edited Sep 12, 2017 09:32PM) (new)

[redacted by S.H.I.E.L.D.] Crap that came out harsher at you then I intended, Rothfuss is a sore spot with me. Apologies.

message 8: by Anirudh (new)

Anirudh Really! I had no idea! I don't really follow authors but thought it might be true! Odd..to say something like that on tv

message 9: by Jimmy (new)

Jimmy Poore Pat rothfuss is a complete douche in real life! Ive seen a couple authors getting snippy with their fans over harmless questions, like last week a bigger known author( cough cough number one on this list) i asked if he would ever make a map for this series and just said my books arent for you if you want a map then went on to write a post on his blog about it and the need to not have maps and whatever. It was really condescending! But anyways rothfuss has been a dick to fans to many times to just chalk it up to having a bad day.

[redacted by S.H.I.E.L.D.] Yeah how dare he answer a question he gets all the time then write about it on his blog. The nerve!

Lark of The Bookwyrm's Hoard It's entirely possible that Doors of Stone was already written (first draft) and is now in the process of being rewritten (subsequent and final drafts.) Rothfuss is a perfectionist when it comes to writing, and it shows. Furthermore, writing, particularly at the calibre of his craftsmanship, isn't something you can do 24-7 or even 12 hours a day. The man has a life; he has a wife and two young children, he runs a charitable foundation, and yes, he plays games. Playing is healthy; I don't begrudge him that time; it probably helps fuel his creativity.

Personally, I would rather he makes sure Doors of Stone is up to the same high standard as the first two books (and answers all the questions and explains all the unexplained clues in the first two), rather than release it before it is ready.

Look, writers aren't machines, and Rothfuss is under enormous pressure to produce a book that will wow everyone the way the first two did...pressure that is only increased when people get mad at him for not churning books out as fast as other writers. That kind of pressure can be a detriment to the creative process. But not everyone writes at the same speed. Most writers can't churn out good books at the rate of a Brandon Sanderson (several large and very good books per year.) Many can't keep up with the publishing-world standard of one a year without sacrificing quality (or length.) Tolkien took decades to write his books, which went through multiple drafts plus volumes and volumes of world-building material and backstory. Rothfuss's worldbuilding is similarly extensive, and he is as meticulous about details as Tolkien.

So maybe we should give the guy a break, huh?

[redacted by S.H.I.E.L.D.] I'd give the guy a break if he wasn't an ass to his fans all the time.

message 13: by Kaitlyn (new)

Kaitlyn I'd be shocked if Doors of Stone is ever published, honestly. He's backtracked how much he's written from "Its done!" to "Well its done but needs editing" to "Well its mostly written" to "Well I wrote out key scenes but nothing connecting them" to "I wrote an outline 10 years ago."

Now even mentioning the third book makes him snap at people, despite the fact that he keeps hyping up this book and selling products based on the trilogy. "Buy my stuff, boy the third book will be great, buy my stuff, what....you want me to conclude the story? F you, you little entitled brat."

I'd bet a significant amount it won't be published in the next 10 years, if it is at all.

message 14: by rachel ☾ (new)

rachel ☾ Removed: Rise as One. 2019 release.

[redacted by S.H.I.E.L.D.] I have a bet with a friend that GRRM wil finish book 7 of ASOIAF before Doors of Stone comes out. :P

message 16: by James (new)

James Webb I think most people would take that bet. GRRM, well he's got a template to follow now, but the deadline of having to finish before GOT has passed so the pressure is off a bit. Which is good as he published (a bit) more when there was less pressure.
Rothfuss now, that's a sore spot for me too. I know why he's behind, and it's not something I consider valid like maybe Scott Lynch. I can't recommend the 'product' they're selling for the moment due to these delays but may one day be able to for Mr Lynch.
There's no contract that states that he must publish on time beyond the obvious expectation from a series, but most jobs would fire you for taking 5 years parental leave, or taking on another job, or two. They'd fire you for spending your time running a charity too, however well intentioned. I can't fire him, but I can not pay him!

message 17: by Anirudh (new)

Anirudh Anirudh wrote: "I could not help but notice that Winds of Winter is not on this list"

Coming back to my own comment after 6 months, there is still no news of Doors of Stone, but now Rothfuss is claiming the trilogy is a prologue, I assume to a larger story, not really sure when it will come out though

On the good side I read about Joe Abercrombie writing another book somewhere!

[redacted by S.H.I.E.L.D.] Yeah Abercrombie has a new trilogy set in the First Law universe, the first is due first half of 2019 I think? I believe the idea is to get the drafts done for all three before they get published..

Rothfuss.. I won't even comment.

message 19: by Anirudh (new)

That's great news indeed! Looking forward to his new Trilogy!

message 20: by Yuri (new)

Yuri I bet Rothfuss will finish his book just before he dies and end it with a cliffhanger.
Also, Scott Lynch can get the hell off this list too, that book won't come out before 2020 and that's being optimistic.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Yeah, this is why there needs to be this list: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1... . "Large discrepancies between anticipated and actual publications."

[redacted by S.H.I.E.L.D.] Scott Lynch has serious mental illness/depression issues and is very open about them and why his book isn't out.

message 24: by Angie (new)

Angie Bosman Can someone remove 499 "State Tectonics"? I added it but it's already on the list (so now it's a duplicate). Thanks and sorry.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Combining duplicates will usually get those, Angie. (Librarians can do that.) And if you know you've just added a duplicate, you can just remove your vote and the system will eventually remove it.

message 26: by Janet (last edited Sep 24, 2018 08:15AM) (new)

Janet Martin A couple of old books are on this list--Twilight, by Stephanie Meyer and City of Bones by Cassandra Clare, both came out years ago and don't belong in the 2018 crop. There may be more

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Where on the list did you see them? (It makes it much easier to find and remove them.)

message 28: by Janet (last edited Sep 25, 2018 04:55AM) (new)

Janet Martin This morning, City of Bones is #284; Twilight is #413. Another possible offender is #500--a collection of 2 novellas previously published separately in book form by Sarah Gailey, which does technically meet the requirement of publication in 2018, but ...

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Both deleted. Thanks very much for telling me where they were. (I left the novella collection.)

message 30: by Sam (new)

Sam I'm really looking forward to reading "Black leopard, Red wolf", , but I am sure it's released in February 2019. not 2018 sadly.

message 31: by Janet (last edited Dec 02, 2018 07:39AM) (new)

Janet Martin I see The True Queen by Zen Cho (#96 today) is now scheduled for March 2019--I haven't even seen an advance copy for this one yet. And Perhaps the Stars by Ada Palmer says sometime in 2019 (#99). Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone by Gabaldon is way out there in the future with 183 ratings before it's even finished, let alone delivered to the publisher

[redacted by S.H.I.E.L.D.] Yeah Ada Palmer is still writing book 4 as of a few weeks ago, so thats not making it this year. :P

message 33: by annob (new)

annob Removed Last Couple in Hell, as it was not released during 2018.

message 34: by Dua (last edited Mar 30, 2021 08:19AM) (new)

Dua Removed The Thorn of Emberlain by Scott Lynch as it comes out in 2021.
Removed The Hidden Palace by Helene Wecker as it comes out in 2021.
