Danielle Thanks for this list. I hope you don't mind that I added a few more. I wasn't sure what to do with "What is the What": technically fiction, but obviously based mostly on fact.

message 2: by Saturday's (new)

Saturday's Child Hi Danielle, thanks for adding to this list. I often find that fiction based on fact is well worth reading.

message 3: by January (new)

January Thanks for this list. It is a gold mine. I am currently doing research for my latest book of poetry/short fiction concerning the rise of Africa in the new economic era. These varied titles provide the appropriate grounding for conversation about how far the continent has come in recent decades since revolution. Missing from this list is, perhaps, Ama Ata Aidoo's Changes and No Sweetness Here. The list is superb!

Saturday's Child Hi January Nicole - glad you like this list which I began I as enjoy reading fiction books about Africa so I wanted to see what else was out there to read. I always enjoy other people's recommendations. Please feel free to add books to it. :)

message 5: by Chris (new)

Chris LOVE this list.... I've mostly been reading non-fiction about Zimbabwe (after visiting there 2 years ago), which I love, but this list is totally GOLD! thank-you!

message 6: by Saturday's (new)

Saturday's Child Glad you like it Chris - keep up the reading :)

message 7: by P. (new)

P. Zoro Hi

I am an African Travel Fiction Author. I wanted to know if it's OK to add my own book to the list. Wouldn't want to offend anyone.

Thank you.

message 8: by Saturday's (new)

BookLovingLady Out of Africa / Shadows on the Grass (currently #146) is, as far as I know, not a work of fiction....

The description of the list says "Any work of fiction that is set in or has Africa in the plot", which is why I haven't added Terug naar Kongo for example, as it is not fiction either (even though it makes a great read).

I haven't removed Out of Africa / Shadows on the Grass (yet), as I'm not the owner of this list :-)

Sue "Out of Africa" #19 is NOT fiction

I've removed Out of Africa, as well as Out of Africa / Shadows on the Grass, as neither titles match the criteria of this list. Haven't removed the other title you mentioned though, as I haven't read it myself.

Sue West with the Night is a memoir of her experiences learning to fly and then attempted solo flight to America

message 15: by Saturday's (new)

Saturday's Child Thanks Sue for removing the Out of Africa ones - West with the Night is non-fiction I'd be happy for that one to be removed as well. :)

message 21: by Capn (last edited Jul 31, 2022 04:42AM) (new)

Capn This book sounded interesting, but sadly isn't on Goodreads:

A Girl Undaunted, or The Honey Queen
Bessie Marchant
"Selfish, self-centered Maleeny and her more agreeable sister Bridget have been sent from the city to spend time with their uncle, who lives in a rural part of Africa. There they meet Patience, a cousin from a remote part of Africa called the Raff. Patience is running away from an obligation to serve as the Honey Queen for a demanding old woman, Karkatura, who rules over a man-free portion of the Raff."
London ; Glasgow : [publisher not identified], 1939.
OCLC: 810820207

I don't suppose it would be an easy one to locate, sadly. :(

and another:
Laurel the Leader
Bessie Marchant
"Laurel's father does not return from a baboon hunting trip, and, with the help of her brothers and her neighbors, Laurel must manage the farm, look after her delicate mother, and find her father."
Blackie & Son: London & Glasgow, [1930]
OCLC: 562108655
