Cecily I added The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, though I confess it's 20 years since I read or saw it. It will be at The Donmar Warehouse in London in the Spring, when I intend to see it, and I may read it before then.

Great! I hope this list will encourage people to read some great literature - even if they are mostly depressing.

Maybe we need a second list of uplifting (but not sentimental), Utopian books?

Can anyone do it in the current world scenario?

message 5: by Cecily (new)

Cecily If we lose hope, we've lost everything.

Lisa (not getting friends updates) Vegan Novels only?

Non-fiction books are here too and obviously there are a million of those.

So fiction?

I've added a couple and I'm sure I can think of more! Probably several hundred if I include historical fiction, heavy on the historical.

I was thinking about the creative imagination - how it sometimes foretells impossible things which comes to pass (or nearly comes to!), sadly.

Non-fiction is different because it has more to do with research rather than imagination. I can think of many books which point fingers to a frightening future. Why don't you create a list yourself?

Lisa (not getting friends updates) Vegan I asked because there are non-fiction books people have added to THIS list.

I'm fine with adding only fiction.

Yes, Cecily has added a play.

Lisa (not getting friends updates) Vegan Ah, you know I think I was noticing another list. All is good.

I guess I was stating "alternative facts" ha ha grrrr

message 12: by Hamza (new)

Hamza I added V for Vendetta. Although it takes place in the UK, the fear seems more imminent here at the moment.

message 13: by Lisa (not getting friends updates) (last edited Jan 25, 2017 09:49AM) (new)

Lisa (not getting friends updates) Vegan I added several books.

I don't think book's stories have to have a particular setting. It's what's going on in the stories that matter.

message 14: by Liz Janet (new)

Liz Janet I already started seeing changes, people that never cared for politics before were focused on the television like there was no tomorrow. I've never been so worried about politics before and that is one of my majors for university.

When I saw that on television I nearly spit out all of my tea.

Lisa (not getting friends updates) Vegan Yes, Very 1984.

Did anyone delete a book OFF The list. Somehow my list has one less book on it. When I have some time I'm sure I'll think of more to add. I have about a dozen on my to read shelf that might easily fit.

message 17: by Cecily (new)

Cecily Lisa wrote: "Did anyone delete a book OFF The list...."

The day after even national parks are not allowed to tweet, that would be sinister indeed.

message 18: by Matt (new)

Matt Lisa wrote: "Yes, Very 1984.

1984 made it #1 bestseller on Amazon this week.

message 19: by Cecily (new)

Cecily Suggestions from The Guardian (I added the couple that weren't already above):
https://www.theguardian.com/commentis...

message 20: by Tim (new)

Tim Might be easier to list dystopian novels that probably won't become reality in Trump's America. Or else just name the list "All Dystopian Literature Ever Except that one by Ayn Rand"

message 21: by Kendall (new)

Kendall Moore Added Judge Dredd: Origins to this list.

This book, no joke, accurately describes the Donald Trump presidency to a tee. A dark satire grown even bleaker in light of current events.

message 22: by Diego (new)

Diego u sit in your room and make conspiracies while other sides of the world are actually going through these things, chad

message 23: by H (new)

H Oh yay! The "Trump Derangement Syndrome" list.. classic LOL

message 24: by Kendall (new)

In what way?

I know, right? This user lists a bunch of conflicting dystopias.
