Why Trump Won: Understanding the 2016 Electorate

In the aftermath of November 8, 2016, countless thinkpieces have been written about how liberals in America were blind to the factors contributing to Donald Trump's victory. Many books have been suggested by columnists, commentators, and academics to help understand what drew voters to Trump and learn about the deep, overlooked issues impacting "the other America."

Please add books to this list that -- in the words of our bubble's beloved New York Times -- help fellow progressives "understand the political, economic, regional and social shifts that drove one of the most stunning political upsets in the nation's history."

Clare O'Beara Hi Ashley,
You were asking why I added some of the books. To me they seemed relevant - lack of water under California, increased leaking of e-mails, resistance against capitalistic society etc. But I do not live in America, so I can only go by the news coverage. It's entirely possible that some books are not relevant.
If you have a particular book in mind please let me know here and I'll look at it again - which is why we are better to query list contents under lists.
Hope this helps.

Dave This list is a great idea! Unfortunately someone seems to have misunderstood the premise. Books like "Toms River", "Indian Country", "The Price of Thirst", "Future Arctic", "Planning for Coastal Resilience", "Walkable City", etc. are all about issues that may affect presidential policy. But they do not advance the understanding of why 62 million Americans (a minority of the voting total!) voted for Donald Trump.

message 3: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Thank you, Dave. That's the concern I had about Clare's additions. Books about environmental issues and urban planning, as two examples, really don't have anything to do with why right-wing populism is on the rise. If anything, those would be motivating issues for Clinton voters.

message 4: by Ashley (new)

Ashley If I had to think of "flagship" books for this topic, it would be ones like "Hillbilly Elegy," "Strangers in Their Own Land," and "Listen, Liberal" -- books that dive deep into the concerns of conservative and populist America and which help explain why someone like Trump became an attractive option.

Clare O'Beara I don't mind taking books off if you think they don't fit, as I say I don't live in America.

message 6: by B.lyon (new)

B.lyon Good list but needs way more books about the racial history of this nation.
