Q&A with Kylie Scott

Posted by Goodreads on April 17, 2017
Feeling thirsty? You've come to the right place. Kylie Scott, author of the popular Stage Dive series, has left behind the rock and roll scene to focus on the love lives of hot bartenders.

Twist, the second book in her Dive Bar series, follows the events of Dirty (but both can be read as standalone romances). Here the spotlight is on bearded mixologist king Joe Collins as he accidentally falls for a woman on an online dating site…while he's logged in as his younger brother. For a guy who usually likes to serve it up straight, Joe's love story is about to have one serious twist.

Scott answers your questions about what she drinks at dive bars, which authors inspire her, and why she believes in crazy love at first sight.

Rosa: Music has transitioned from your Stage Dive series to your Dive Bar series—even if it's now a much smaller aspect of the newer stories. What role does music play in your life?

Kylie Scott: I've always been addicted to rock and pop music. Now I make playlists for every book I write. I find it helps set the mood if I'm stumbling around a bit with the story.

April: There are so many heartbreaking scenes in Twist! How did you get inspired to write such difficult moments?

KS: I like grit and realism in my romances. It helps the characters grow and learn. Usually the heartbreaking scenes are just part of the general progression of the story.

Caitlin: Thanks for creating such hilarious and complicated characters! I adore your whole Stage Dive series. What bands or singers inspired Stage Dive?

KS: Thank you! Bands like Kings of Leon and the Killers.

SmotherstheWorld: Do you ever drop hints or hide secrets in your books that you know only a few people will find? I'm always curious about this when I read a book, and it would be so cool to get the answer from one of my favorite authors!

KS: There are probably some inside jokes that keep coming up. Hints of future plot points from the next book can sometimes turn up, too.

Antonella: When you go to a dive bar, what do you drink?

KS: Something with vodka in it usually.

Casey: What drew you to Portland when you were deciding where to set your Stage Dive books? Did you ever go there for research?

KS: It was the city motto: Keep Portland Weird. And I only got to go there for research after Lick had been released.

Sonal: With all the writing you do, do you get enough time to read? Who are some of your recent favorite authors?

KS: I try to read at least a couple of books a week. I love Tijan, Karina Halle, Kristen Callihan, Kristen Ashley, Katy Evans, Emma Chase, K. Bromberg, Penny Reid, Amie Kaufman, Huntley Fitzpatrick, Erin Watt, Holly Black, Robin McKinley, and Stephen King. The list could go on for a very long time, so I'll stop there for now.

Christiana: Do you personally believe in crazy love at first sight?

KS: Absolutely. I have friends who it has happened to. Sometimes you can just tell a person is going to be important to your world.

Verna: What's your favorite thing to do when you release a new book?

KS: Freak the f*ck out. That's about the only thing I can do.

Hannah: If you had to marry one of your characters, who would you pick?

KS: Hmm. I don't know who my husband would be most like. He's very smart and sensible, so he kind of thinks things through while I spiral into crazy. At the end of the day, we balance each other out. Probably David from Lick.
