Ash is a good girl who adores her mother and father. Her mother follows the old ways of 'superstition' and fairy tales (regarded as being real accounts) being held as sacred. The magic of the world is leaving and fairies are hard pressed to find anyone who still possesses it. Ash's mother curses a fairy who pursues her to fall in love with a mortal girl (not knowing that it would be her own daughter). He watches over Ash as her mother dies. the plot (there was none). the love story. i generally find love stories to be boring and cliche, but this one was worse than usual. the entire conflict revolves around a love triangle (yawn), and the "conflict" (who will Ash choose?) resolution is incredibly unsatisfying and poorly explained. ...more

This book holds up well to re-reading. I really enjoy how realistic Ash's character and motivations are. Her grief is poignant and her reactions to grief are believable. The fairy world is intriguing, the imagery is beautiful, and I really enjoy Ash's struggle for independence.
