This book begins as an asteroid i s about to hit our planet. The main character Denise is trying to get her drug addict mother to hurry so they can make it to the shelter to which they've been assigned. Her sister is missing. I liked the characters and the diversity but the main character never seemed to stick with a primary motivation or moral code. I would still recommend. It was a compelling read. ...more

"Usefulness, or death - those couldn't be the only two choices."

A good story - but so long! So much so that we don't actually get to the good story until the last 100 pages or so, and by that time three quarters of the book is already over. With a small side note that in leaning so much on several different social needs, it could be argued that the author's trying just a bit too hard, when more obvious categorisations get less than half a sentence each.
