Most Americans are somewhat familiar with the infamous Donner Party, a group of pioneering settlers in 19th century who got stuck in a snow covered pass in the Sierra Nevada mountains and resorted to cannibalism to stay alive. Alma Katsu takes this harrowing tale of death and survival and adds supernatural elements to the all-too-human drama. Slight upgrade from 3-star, because I ate a dinner of hot lamb strips as I was reading the last 100 pages, which gave a grim realism to their encounters with cannibalism.
