A very, very rare 5 star review. This is the book I will shoving at people and yelling, “Here! You must read this! NOW!” for a long time to come.

Most Americans are somewhat familiar with the infamous Donner Party, a group of pioneering settlers in 19th century who got stuck in a snow covered pass in the Sierra Nevada mountains and resorted to cannibalism to stay alive. Alma Katsu takes this harrowing tale of death and survival and adds supernatural elements to the all-too-human drama. A terrifying reimagining of the events that befell Donner party. Historical fiction/horror done right. I thoroughly enjoyed this tense, atmospheric novel. A retelling of the infamous Donner Party expedition to make the crossing to California along the Oregon Trail. Like a much more sensitive retelling of The Terror, but whereas Dan Simmons writes like a 16-year-old, Alma Katsu writes with thoughtfulness and diligence. Slight upgrade from 3-star, because I ate a dinner of hot lamb strips as I was reading the last 100 pages, which gave a grim realism to their encounters with cannibalism. ...more

Really really liked this one! It was gross, terrifying, made me very uncomfortable at points. an excellent alternate history romp into both monsters and the monsters that are humans.
