No. That was disappointing. And pretentious. And annoying. I suppose it is/will be considered funny or witty or insightful by some. And it's not that the situations and settings and characters aren't somewhat interesting. And the book was readable. This book hit the perfect sweet spot for me of magic and techno-futurism. It was a great apocalyptic, end of the world story. Bonus: set in San Francisco by someone who clearly lives here and knows the city! Totally loved it.

meh. This was a GR Deal of the Day, and the premise intrigued me (talking to birds!)... but from the very beginning, I wasn't sure if I wanted to read it after all. The parents were so over-the-top ridiculously horrible, it was painful to read such bad um story telling. But then the assassin comes along, and I decided that's just how the story is. The early chapters felt awkward and choppy, and I'm not sure I'd have read any further if this hadn't been a book club pick. After that rough start, I ended up liking it a lot.

The characters were easy to care about, and I loved the way they could talk about anything and everything without their musings dragging down the plot. There were times when the prose got a little too cute for me though.
