Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.

Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another.

Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

My initial Opinions
From reading the blurb I was expecting a book that was a mixture of Grave Mercy and The Hunger Games. I haven't heard much about this book but I saw it in a book shop and I decided to get the eBook,so I could try the series out. I love books about assassins and I hope that this one will be filled with as much killing and assassin secrets like in Grave Mercy. I am not going to assume anything about this book at the moment but, I will see what it is like when I read it.

My Final Opinion
It took my a couple of days to gather my thoughts and write a review because I was just... lost on what to write. For me not writing in a first narration affected my like towards the novel as I felt like it constantly jumped between characters without any flow of the story. I was disappointed with the assassin aspect because it was nothing compared to what I have read about them.
Overall, even though I didn't set any expectations, I was disappointed with the way that the story was written as well as portrayed in the novel. I believe that this was a good book but it is worth 3.5 stars - closer to the 3. I will however, continue the series and I hope that the next book will be better because, I LOVE reading about assassins and I need more assassin books in my TBR pile. ...more

Before I started this book I heard a lot of good, but also bad stuff, so I decided to read a review, too.

First thing about this book is: If you like realistic fights and cruel coldblooded killers, you might not like this one.
Celaena Sardothien is supposed to be a cold blooded assassin, but sadly the author totally failed that aspect of the story. In my opinion Celaena acts like any other young girl and not like someone, who was trained to kill people without a second thought. I actually like her ...more

YES. Finally! They're releasing a reprint of the first book in hardcover with the updated cover design. I CAN FINALLY BUY WHAT IS RELEASED OF THIS SERIES IN HARDCOVER!! And they'll all match each other and sit prettily on my shelf (when I finally get one of course.)

I loved the premise, and I will definitely read the next one... (at... some point)

I was constantly irritated by the vanity and arrogance of Celaena, however. At time she seemed like a super awesome BAMF, and others... meh...

I must say I did like the part when she (view spoiler)

I loved Kaltain's storyline (not her, her storyline) in a weird kinda way (view spoiler) I loved the premise, and I will definitely read the next one... (at... some point)

At the beginning, I LOVED Dorian and Chaol like LOADS, but now I am all for Chaol. He is so subtle with (view spoiler) And Dorian's a bit of a ponce, sorry

An Celaena was awesome most of the time - And the tunnel... omg, don't get me started on how much I loved that, that was awesome.

And CAIN was terrifying! (view spoiler) - And the choice of name for Cain was perfect looky here:
"Cain and Abel were, according to the Book of Genesis, two sons of Adam and Eve. Cain is described as a crop farmer and his younger brother Abel as a shepherd. Cain was the first human born and Abel was the first human to die. Cain committed the first murder by killing his brother. It has been typically assumed that the motives were jealousy and anger."
