Actually I had a hard time reading Daughter of Smoke and Bone, since I didn't really like the first chapters, but didn't hate them either.
The story is quite original and mysterious, yet it failed to pull me in. Even when the story got more intresting toward the end, my "I-can't-stop-reading" moment never showed up.

So I'm giving Daughter of Smoke and Bone 3 stars, with the intention to read the next book in the series. If the story keeps up to be as intresting as the last chapters, it still might ...more

This book is big and it is shy of no details, the truth of who Karou is quite the lip biter.
When you start out you think Karou is really an orphan as you go along weird stuff start happening like the handprints and the secrecy of everything, things are becoming dire. Then we meet Akiva and literally everything goes to (You know what).
Akiva wants to know who she is, everyone want to know what she is. I kinda already assigned her the title of Chimaera, because if I don't know what to say really.

Akiva wants to know who she is, everyone want to know what she is. I kinda already assigned her the title of Chimaera, because if your raised by one in my head you are one. But when you get the last part it's like how right did I have to be.
I loved the part when Akiva see's the Wishbone and breaks down crying on the street, then Liraz and Hazel show up and Hazel goes "Akiva, really. Pull yourself together." I dies of laughter.
Sad tear jerker parts are in the end when the truth is all but undeniable. Madrigal was caught in the temple of secret love with Akiva, betrayed by her own sister. As she is waiting to be killed for her treason she talks to Brimstone and he talks about how in order to move the osuls to new bodies they use smoke or an item to lead the soul to, Hints the part of the title Smoke and Bone.
I thought it was clever how Laini did that putting little snippets of the title to use in the story others would have the title suggest to the story but not Laini.
I hate however how Laini Taylor rips out my heart with the ending. Akiva is holding back. Karou wants to know why. He brought her the half moon blades claiming she might need them later. He is constantly asking her to remember that he loves her, and he keeps saying that she is going to hate him, and he doesn't want her to hate him more. Why? Because Brimstone is dead and the blood might as well be on his hands. Why!?!?!?!

The whole deal with the teeth at first was creepy, now I understand, just like Karou. The teeth were used to create bodies for the Chimaera souls. they only used healthy teeth to make health bodies. Creepy but very good leading to this point.

Over all, now matter how heart broken I am. and trust me I am very heart broken. I loved the story when it picked up, I found it hard to put down and I loved the twists. character development is something that was more that exceptional in this book. Laini Taylor outdid herself and it's only the first book. If this were just one book I would have had some words but it will carry very amazingly as a series. I give with book a BIG thumbs up and a million gold stars!!! Thanks for the read Laini!!! ...more

Really glad to have spend a bucks for my curiosity (speaking of cover). This is a nice purchase.

The book where chimaeras are the good ones and seraphims gone bad, for the meantime, I guess (for the first book). Angels, devils, underworld creatures, etc. It's really great to have my imagination circled and pictured out how angels looks like, in perfection. And devils in a very extravagance and overly features. I can't wait for the film adaptation for this, I want to see how they will put it befo ...more
