I think this book did a good job of bringing a lifetime of 70 years to the forefront. The story moved back and forth between three generations and how each changed over time. By leaving out the racist issues - such as the lynching and the segregated floor plan at Stanley's - this could have been any family - black or white. The things that Stringfellow built her novel around are not pertinent to one race or to one generation.
