Started off mediocre and went downhill from there.
A couple with 2 children rent a house far out in no where land for a vacation. When there is a black out in Long Island their tranquility is interrupted by the owners of the house showing up. Their excuse was that they were also traveling and this house was closer than their home on Long Island and they would like to stay for the night.

The synopsis of this book painted a totally different story than the one I actually read. Not to say this book is garbage, but it's pretty close. The racism and sexual metaphors were quite disturbing and uneccessary. I'm not sure if it was meant for comic relief of what, but it didn't work. Amanda and Clay should be careful what they wish for. They want to leave the world behind, and they do, and then some. I didn’t know much about this book before I read it. I liked the cover, my book friends were buzzing about it, and I thought it was about racial conflict. There’s that, but then it goes off the rails.
I admired so much about this book. The prose was fantastic, and the pace was masterful, ratcheting up and up with punchy chapters. There’s no way I would have quit reading halfway ...more
