Re read this wonderful gem of a book for our bookclub & so glad I did re read it , it’s every bit as wonderful as I remembered when it was first published , I’d go so far as to say it’s in my top ten favourite books of all time. Perfect escapism in a pandemic lockdown to escape to the circus 🎪 in the good old USA in the 30s , but my goodness weren’t we cruel to the glorious animals and to fellow humans , all life seemed so cheap and what misery and crimes linked to poverty. I have no interest in the circus. Elephants, I dig, because they are immense in bulk and yet sweet in disposition, and I’m into that kind of contradiction. But if you said, here’s a book about elephants, I’d likely raise an eyebrow at you and silently turn away. Sans book.
So why did I read Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants? More importantly, why did I stay up way past my bedtime last night glued to the last few chapters?
