What Members Thought
This is a book I chose for my Book Club reading selection. I was a bit hesitant to choose it because my last book (Tom Lake) wasn't loved by some of the more vocal members (even if I personally enjoyed it). But I was drawn to the title...largely because although I don't have the same abusive history Jennette McCurdy did with her mother, I lost my mother in November of 2021 and even if I miss her every day, after watching her suffer so mercilessly for the last 6 years of her life, I too am glad s

I hadn't planned on reading this book but it was available when I was looking for another one --- I'm glad I read it. The title is a bit off-putting to me, but as most things, nothing regarding family issues is simple. It made me wonder more what other child actors lives are like - and sad that so many are sacrificed for other people's egos.

WHITCOULLS Top 100: I'm Glad My Mom Died - No 34
A sad and disturbing novel of McCurdy's early life. She's not an actress I know (my children are Hannah Montana era).
Her mother was very manipulative and pushed her daughter into the career she wanted. This lead to McCurdy's revealing deeply personal parts of her life. This is courageous and raw.
An alarming life that has taken McCurdy more than a decade the move away from.

It was so interesting to see that aspect of a relationship. It always amazes me how a mother can act that way towards a child, be abusive and dress it up as love. It was interesting and good to see that she was not writing out of a comeback, that she is still has a problem that will probably follow her the rest of her life and that she will not act again. Hopefully it was a cleansing for her and she can move forward.
