I read this book after falling in love with Ishiguro's writing after reading Never Let Me Go. The beginning was a little slow, and left me wondering if I could really read an entire book about a stuffy English butler... That said, the story was amazing. After the first couple of chapters, the reader gets so entwined in the feelings of Stevens. I think that it's incredible, how well the author entwined comedy and tragedy in a way that you could not consistently tell them apart. I ended this book

I picked up this book after my daughter was assigned it for her English class. It was definitely a little slow to get into for me, but quite poignant once I got into the meat of it. It's far more than a story about British butlery and more a story about the lives we choose for ourselves. I definitely recommend it.

I guess I expected more from this very closed off individual. some sway of emotion or something, but the only hint is at the death of his dad.
I'm hoping the movie can pull this one all the way around for me. Otherwise, it was a dry read, and kind of bland. ...more

How sad. I keep picturing poor Stevens working on his banter to impress his employer. Stevens does get a little emotional as he looks back at his life, but not unduly so. Unlike us, I don't think Stevens truly realises what a barren life his has been, & so isn't so very sad at devoting his life to service. The fact that he's worked hard at being the perfect butler is really a great comfort to him.
I'm glad I've finally read this but it made me very tired.
