"Healing by way of vengeance."

What a wonderfully delicious mystery! A distraught wife, upset and betrayed by her husband, decides to use the tickets for their tenth anniversary for a solo trip. There she is convince to dig around at a shoreline that unearths a mysterious small apothecary bottle.

From there, you are pulled in to the mystery. There are three POV - Caroline, the present storyline, Eliza, a maid to a mistress and Nella, the apothecary. It's amazing as the story unfolds because Eliza

There are a lot of mixed reviews for this book - some great, some terrible. I don't believe it's either of those things. I found it enjoyable - especially the 18th century storyline. It has something of a scholarly feel to it - similar (but not as good as) The Discovery of Witches trilogy. The modern storyline was not as good as the historical one, mostly because the heroine acted stupidly in several situations. I was also troubled by the secrets she chose to keep - it made me like her less.

Nella and Eliza gripped me from the beginning, and the unraveling mystery sucked me along. The ending and the contemporary storyline fell flat, however. Too many things came easy, it all felt a bit rushed, and yet certain moments also lingered too long. I was well immersed and enjoyed the ride, so bumped it up to 4 stars.

A very interesting novel, told from two different perspectives/times. The plot line was incredibly interesting, and it had some great twists. Highly enjoyable!

I liked the story. The writing was a little lacking. So much more could have been done with this novel. I would have like to see more. With that being said, it did keep my attention and I was able to finish it within a week. Had it not been as interesting, I would have given up on it awhile ago.

I kept thinking that this book would get more interesting and have more depth. It didn't. It was just an ok read. I didn't hate it and since it kept my interest in the car, I will give it a 2. The current timeline was the most interesting because I wanted to see what choices she will end up making. The characters from the past were less interesting. If the characters had been developed better and had more believable storylines, I would have enjoyed this more. ...more

There is no way a budding, or any historian, would throw an old bottle that is central to her PhD or leave out an essential part of the story. Leaving out this incredible part saves no one!! Why??? A few parts just felt a little unrealistic to me.
