What a wonderful, heartbreaking but heartwarming, and oh so, hopeful story. I just adored it.
I love a grumpy main character who slowly figures out he has a nougaty center and Linus is no exception. He is living a greyscale life with his predictable routines at a case worker at Department in Charge Of Magical Youth, and at home. Then he is ordered by Extreme Upper Management to investigate a top secret orphanage and report back.

I'm not a huge fantasy fan, but this read a bit more like a fairytale. Orphanages for magical creatures, a case worker who has a perspective shift, and a love story. A solid 4.5 stars.

Just about everyone read this last year, but I finally got my hands on a copy from my library. To me, it was cheesy, sweet, funny, quirky, heartwarming, relatable, and incredibly predictable. I did like it better than Under the Whispering Door because the character progression felt more natural, but it was basically the same setup.
It has great messages about acceptance, diversity, found family, and home. But these messages are not subtle in the least, you have no choice but to get these!
