Going into this book, I had some expectation as it was nominated for a Goodreads “best of” awards. “The Turn of the Key” was my first novel by Ruth Ware. The premise of a new nanny walking to an ideal job, has scary fate written all over it. However, throughout this book I found myself someone what enthralled with the pacing of the book. Ruth can build to a somewhat spooky atmosphere without it being too intense. The book has an interesting way of accounting the events leading up to Rowan’s arre ...more

This book creeped me out! I listened to the audiobook version, which was awesome. Loved the atmosphere of the book. What I didn't love: The way this was written in letter form, which makes no sense at all. Who has the time to write a book in letter form to someone just to tell a story that could be told way faster. I also didn't like the ending, there was really not a lot of pay-off for me.

Not really a spoiler, but more details concerning the ending: (view spoiler)

A young woman, Rowan, writes to a lawyer from prison asking for him to represent her and help prove her innocence. Rowan had been nannying for a wealthy family in a beautiful home with a "haunted" past and her time there ends with a death.
Several plot twists, fast paced, and a fun Halloween read for our book club (although I read it in November).

The atmosphere of a home with an old and dark history juxtaposed with the features of a modern smart home bumped up the spooky happenings in this story.

We have not the most likable protagonist, but I think she kept it interesting.

The twist was interesting, but the rest left me unenthused.

I think fans of Ruth Ware will like this book, if you are on the fence-like I am-your enjoyment of this story could go either way.
