What Members Thought
Reads very quickly and is quite creepy. In fact, I feel like this is probably the darkest of Ware's books -- perhaps I feel that way because children are involved. I won't say anything to spoil the ending, but to make a more generalized remark, I actually found the "explanation" to be quite simple, and it was delivered rather abruptly. This was an interesting contrast to the book I read just before it -- Lock Every Door, by Riley Sager. I also enjoyed the latter but found the explanation behind

Page turner with a rushed ending
The book really unfolded like a great haunted house story and kept me reading. The characters got a tad complex and made you wonder 80% through what was really going on but then things were revealed and the story wrapped up rather abruptly. Very long road to get to the end and then it all mashed together. I wouldn’t say you couldn’t predict some of the ending either. I feel like some of the characters could have been more present at the end. You are left wondering ...more

I had some issues with The Haunting Of Hill House when I first read it but looking back months later, I better appreciate how influential and clever it is. The Turn Of The Key seems inspired by many of its best ideas, but expands upon them with a higher page count and more in-depth detail of the enigmatic house itself. The sort of shifting from day to night is also present, with night scenes c

The atmosphere of a home with an old and dark history juxtaposed with the features of a modern smart home bumped up the spooky happenings in this story.
We have not the most likable protagonist, but I think she kept it interesting.
The twist was interesting, but the rest left me unenthused.
I think fans of Ruth Ware will like this book, if you are on the fence-like I am-your enjoyment of this story could go either way.
