"Most of the time, everyone deserves more than one chance. We all do things we regret now and then. You just have to carry them with you."

I think some books are just a little too close to real life. This story started slow - filled with teenage dreams, dramas and after school assignments. I know it was an important part of the story and pulled the strings together of the story web, but I just didn't feel pulled in.

When I finally hit half way, the story started to pull me in. But this is....just

Celeste (what a beautiful name btw) Ng's writing is SO good. I can't believe I was instantly dragged into the story and couldn't close it.
Thanks Cos' for gifting me with this one.

I had really liked her first book. For this one, it was my third try before I could get into it. My first two tries, I was bored and couldn’t read beyond Pearl and Moody becoming friends. I didn’t feel like reading a book about teenagers. The third time, I stuck with it as the story became bigger and the characters more sympathetic and/or repellent and rounder. Taking place in an affluent neighborhood, it was a bit cliche at times, especially in regard to the characters and their personalities (the popular girl, the jock, the emo book lover, the angry/troubled sibling, the girl with a lower socioeconomic status than the rest). There was also the subplot regarding the custody issue, which didn’t quite tie into the m ...more

Enjoyed discovering Mia through her past and especially enjoyed the description of her art. The bubble of Shaker Heights and the Richardson’s was very eye opening and provided an opportunity for introspection...this was a good read.

A great read. I’d been meaning to read the author’s first book years ago but picked this up because of all the recent buzz. I also heard Celeste Ng being interviewed on CBC radio the other day so a timely read. The interview actually provided a bit more insight as to nuances in the book. Being a Chinese Canadian 1st gen who struggled with infertility and now the mother of teenager s-I guess one can guess why I was drawn to the plot! Aside from the plot I found the author’s description and writin ...more
