If I could I would give it 4 and 1/2 stars.....because of the writing....it seemed to have a bit of a lack of flow. Apparently, it was originally written as a play or screenplay.... so it kinda reads in spurts.

But other than that, it was very engaging......and eye opening, and sad. It truly amazes me that 1/3 of Americans today believe that the holocaust never happened, and was faked. WTF is up with that??

Climate deniers, science deniers, people who support a fascist leader of America in 2016 to the present. Fascism that we fought against in WWII is back, which in some ways makes this novel , based on a true couple and a true story, even that much more horrifying. Our President has camps , of people and children in cages on our Southern border today, and 1,000s of adults & children have become imprisioned, many have become sick & have DIED due to the cold, poor conditions, lack of proper food, American soldiers harrassing people in these camps. History repeating itself!!!

So, this story is even more significant.Even more harrowing!! The situation in the 1940s started with keeping people inside a fence, separation of families, like is happening in America right now,and then it esculated into so much more....... I never dreamed that we would be doing close to the same things in our country today. But people support it, or say it's "fake news" that it's NOT happening at all, many say. It's fake news....it means those American individuals are supporting a regime like Hitler's, and in order for them to sleep at night......they say none of it is happening now , or they say that this story never happened...and hence those individuals would never read this book. They would consider it a waste of time. Antisemitism is alive and well today. Racism, bigotry is still alive today in America and around the world. Why do we not learn, and ignore what's going on around us??? Can we not learn from what happened in Germany,and Europe??

The man this book is about told the author, who interviewed him, that he wanted to be written about to keep this from happening again today. He died in 2006, 3 years after his wife, whom he tattooed in the same camp as himself. Where he was forced to tattoo 1,000s of Jews, held against their will in camps....under deplorable conditions,and the same type of camps are happening today in America. We allowed 1,000s of the survivors to immigrate to America, to have a better life outside of the camps,and now we are doing it to people seeking asylum today???

I didn't consider this book a waste of time. Today is INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST REMEMBERANCE DAY, January 27th, 2019, the day that I finished this book. 74th anniversary of the liberation of the camp by the Russians. I started the book, not knowing the significance of it...till I saw it on the news.

Read it. Stand up against such camps today.
