“But it’s fitting in a way—Father loved the fact that a lilac only blossoms after a harsh winter.”

This is a wonderful but difficult story. The fact that it's based in fact- that many characters like Herta and Caroline are, in fact, based on real people (and are real names). That the two sisters, Zuzanna and Katia are based on two girls who were Rabbits, and their bond after finding each other in the camp. Both things blew me away.

I've read quite a few books on concentration camps, but very few

Loved every bit of this war time story told from 3 different perspectives. Only complaint? Did not like the ending. What happened to Dr Herta? Jail or did she walk? Did Caroline make her way back to Paul? Guess I have to write my own happy endings for these ladies. :)

Superb historical fiction that is largely based on real people and the all women's concentration camp, Ravensbruck, in nazi Germany. The three main character's perspectives (Caroline, Kasia and Herta) and each of their narratives added depth and feeling to a horrific time during Hitler's regime that I, as a reader, did not personally experience and can only experience through reading about it. The author did such an amazing job of bringing these women to life. A great read. ...more

Sadly I just couldn’t get into this one. I normally love books about WW2 and the lives of the people who experienced that horrible tragedy. This book though just didn’t feel like it had any heart to it. The characters were bland and dull. I really wanted to enjoy this. I’m disappointed.

I wanted to like this book more. It was just so depressing. I felt bad for how I dreaded coming back to it. It really happened and I couldn't even handle reading about these horrors. I felt I needed to finish this book and I'm so glad I did. The last half of the book was so much more hopeful and I was finally seeing how these three stories were tied together. I also hated how Caroline never got together with her French love:( And then to find out this part wasn't even true. Sigh.
