This was much better then I was expecting based on ratings I looked at. Enjoyable but never screamed out to me to keep picking it back up. The ending had an nice little twist that I never saw coming. Time to wait for the library to get a copy of the next book, because it's pretty much a to be continued kind of thing.

I always start out really, really wanting to like Oz adaptations, and then they end up majorly disappointing me (I'm looking at you, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West). I liked this one through the first third of the book, but I felt like the tone never quite meshed for me. So here we are. a new re-telling of Oz. The cover, the great title - all played into me thinking this would be a wonderful book.
Sadly, I just never connected with Amy Gumm. I liked the story in the beginning, as we got a few details of her life with her mom. But as soon as she landed in Oz, I was bored. I didn't care for any of her cast of characters - close enough to Dorothy's cast that it was easy to draw the parallels. I think most frustrating was ever ...more
