What Members Thought
THIS is one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century? Why? I guess I missed something. Holden Caulfield is just an unpleasant character, and nothing much ever happens in the book. I found it a chore to get through until right towards the end. I liked Holden's little sister and how much he cared for her.

True to its reputation, The Catcher in the Rye is actually quite an enjoyable book to read - assuming you can get past the the waaa-I-hate-the-world emo parts, which is substantial.
It's not as depressing as people made it out to be and I actually found some of the relationships very endearing. Holden Caulfield may feel like he's a mess of a kid, but he's not as fucked up as he painted himself to be, and maybe that's one of the reasons why many people can relate with him as a character. Gave me a absolute headache. Maybe I would have appreciated this book more as a teen, but as a mom of teens, I just wanted to smack him. Sorry to offend anyone who enjoyed it.
Even though some of us had read this back in high school we decided to do it for book club. It's funny to go back and re-read a book like this, I got so much more out of it than I did in high school.
