What Members Thought
This is my first truely steampunk read and I must say I was not disappointed. This seems to combine the best of sci-fi, fantasy and the old fashioned science stylings that I associate with traditional steampunk with hybrid automatons found alongside traditional weaponry and trains as a primary form of transport. Throw in a whole range of new species and lifeforms and you have a recipe for a city that has a depth of character rivalled only by these characters' stories. I did find that Mieville us

SO I ended up finishing this one after seven months of picking up and putting it down) well, ignoring in my audible app).
The writing is beautiful. The creatures in it are original and the world is detailed.
I kept putting this book down because of the lack of hope or humour.

Early on in my reading of this, I really wasn't wild about it. In general, I don't enjoy reading horror, and there is certainly a lot of that here. But the character Isaac and the variety of creatures and sentient non-human beings kept me reading through the entire (very long) book, especially as I watched the relationship developing between Isaac and the Garuda that asks him for help. Miéville has an amazing imagination! I can't actually say I enjoyed reading the book, and I haven't decided yet
