Shaun Tan's wordless graphic novel is brilliant! With no words to tell you the story, it makes you feel as an immigrant might who doesn't speak the language and has to understand everything by eyes alone. And Tan's world is just different enough that we as readers are also immigrants there who must attempt to learn the language as we go. Simply brilliant!

"The Arrival" was different from anything else I have ever read before. It's a story of immigration told with only pictures, no written words. The pictures are fantastic and make you feel like your right there along with the immigrants. It leaves you with some of the feelings immigrants must feel coming to a new country, not knowing the language or the customs. The world Tan has created is just as foreign to me as his character. I felt overwhelmed by the symbols and not being able to understand

Like the breath that catches in your throat before you are about to kiss a dearly beloved one for what might be the last time, The Arrival will surprise and leave one in awe. I couldn't quite believe it, but from the very first page there were tears forming in my eyes and I knew the longing of home and the sorrow of loss and sometimes of change. It was clear that he left his family and country and went to another land, that he had difficulty finding work and a place to live, and that there were so many more people in the new city that he felt lost. He had a pet that befriended him. He found a job in a factory. And, at last, his family came over too.

I didn't know what to expect when I opened this book (beautifully designed cover) and I was amazed. The illustrations are so detailed, every drawing, every moment was captured perfectly in sepia tones. Even though there are no words in the book, the pictures described everything for the reader.

What an absolutely interesting book. It was beautifully depicted and being an immigrant myself, I can fully relate to the experience. The strange places and strange things were, of course, surprising and in a way, isolating, but the kind welcoming people more than make up for the isolation. Of course, there's no better ending... (I won't spoil it for you).

A wordless graphic novel that lets you follow an immigrant on his trip to a new land. Enchanting drawings. I loved this magical tale. Try it..you'll like it.
