In a sense, this was the best book in the trilogy. It was dark, gritty, horrific and thought provoking, managing to remind us of important lessons from our history: that war is not a game, that in a war any atrocity can be justified if it brings victory, that there’s no glory in killing innocent people, that the faces of a revolution/movement can outlive their usefulness (see Che Guevara or Malcom X), how revolutions sometimes are as bad as what came before (see Russia and Cuba) or ...more

Wow. It wasn't what I expected, except now I can see that it was exactly how this story needed to end. It felt slow in the beginning, but I didn't mind it. I didn't feel compelled to read this all in one sitting. In fact, I enjoyed stretching it out over a few days. It didn't pull me in and carry me along as much as the other two - until the last hundred pages or so. But although this third book was different from the other two for me, I enjoyed it immensely. I've just this minute finished it, a

I enjoy reading YA books but not a lot of them had me sitting and thinking about the story long after I finish. This one is one of the few that did that to me.
I read the first book many years ago and whilst I liked the premise of the games, I found the parts where Katniss talked about Gale & Peeta to be too waffling and too much. Hence I decided not to read the sequels.
Until the movie came out.
I went on a trip not long after seeing the movie and bought the Kindle version to read on the plane. I ...more

So this was a hard book to rate, because I liked it, it was okay. I love how it wasn't yet again let's go back and have another hunger games, that was a plus. I was dreading that. The whole time reading I kept on thinking this is going to be a book that the ending will make or break it, and sadly it broke it. I was let down by the end, it felt as if she was losing steam in writing it. The best thing about the ending was Buttercup and Katness bonding. ...more

a friend described the end of this series as 'merciless' and that is really the only word i can think to use in describing it. it was perfect-- as unrelenting as the entire series thus far, if not more so. if anything could make the first two books seem tame in comparison, it's this. collins proves her bravery as an author-- there are no neat endings here, no pretty tied-up resolutions. this is a tough book; it had me near tears for most of the last third of it. but it's written with the same im

Not quite as good as the other two in the series but still enjoyable. Not having the Games as a focal point made the book seem unstructured and a little dragged out but I still felt like I didn't want to put it down.

An excellent end to the trilogy. There would be no point to reading this if you haven't read the first two books. If you have read the first two, you'll definitely want to read the concluding piece.
