What Members Thought
I really enjoyed the premise of this book and although Dresden got on my nerves sometimes (he seems to think he's responsible for everything and doesn't give himself some credit), I liked him well enough that I'm giving him a second chance.
I don't think I'm continuing this series in audio though. Maybe James Marsters has gotten better as the books move along but for this first book, he was average at best. His voices are not distinctive enough (sometimes I can't tell if it's Dresden or somebody ...more

This barely squeaked by at a 4 for me. The ending (or the drawn-out lead-up to) were what bumped it back for me. Will review in full later, but for now, let's say it was good and worth my time, but I am glad that multiple people have told me the series improves.

This book should have been brilliant, but I found it to be somewhat pedestrian. There were moments of humour, moments of cleverness and suspense, but they didn't hang together enough for me. Harry engendered sympathy because of the unjust situation he was in with the White Council, but I thought Bob the Skull was more interesting. I finished it, but at no stage was it un-put-downable.

This was a great read! It was fun and full of mystery as well as all the paranormal creatures I love to read about, who could ask for more.
Harry is a Wizard who works by contract on special cases with the police. He's brought in to help get to the bottom of what would be needed to cause a spell strong enough to kill its victims in such a horrible fashion. I mean really, whoever is doing the killing is one twisted soul. While he's trying to help out he runs into several obstacles, which are goin ...more

This was a quick, light read that I quite enjoyed. I've heard that the series gets even better as it goes along, so I plan to read more of these in the future. I immediately liked Harry, even though he does tend to get a bit descriptive about every woman he meets. I've seen a few episodes of the TV show, so in the beginning I kept seeing Paul Blackthorne and hearing his voice for Harry. But after a couple of chapters, that mostly went away. (Although I do think Paul Blackthorne makes a very good

This book had too much world-building and not enough character development for my taste, but it provided enough interest that I'm willing to read the next book in the series. The author could use a better editor (perhaps also coming in the later books in the series?) to help cut some of the more ridiculous phrases, but overall, the book was entertaining and a very fast read.
