I think I liked this book more than many readers because I found it a book to ponder, psychologically, that is. There are so many scenarios and factors in such a situation. I didn't find the book all that believable, and again, in a way, I liked that. It made me think more. It helped my imagination say, what if? What happens when people of power and means are suddenly entrapped? And the captors, what if they became emotionally involved with their hostages? As a hostage situation lengthens, what ...more

This is one of those books that I picked up from the library, but then sat on the pile staring at me through several renewals, before I actually managed to read it (yeah, I know ;) ). But when I did, I was pleasantly surprised. It was a beautifully written book but lacked the ability to keep your interest. A hostage situation that goes on for a long time with absolute inaction on both sides. There was some development of relationships between hostages and terrorists but very little else

I had a hard time getting into this book, but once I did I really enjoyed it. At first it seemed it wasn't going to go anywhere (in the physical sense, it doesn't) or do anything. But the richness of the book is in the characters, and in their slowly shifting relationships. I found the epilogue a bit contrived, but I can't imagine any ending I would've been satisfied with.
