I enjoyed this one. I thought it was funny and quirky. I don't think I truly got the differences between the left-handed and right-handed booksellers and why there needed to be a difference. I figured there was a deeper meaning there and just didn't dig deeper to find it. I didn't really know it was 1983 until some references about a song on the radio, or a swatch, or something else was referenced.

As always, Garth Nix delivers. A comfort read for me with a mix of fantastical myths and pop cultures. Oh, and since it's set in the 80s, most references would be rather limited to that era. Yes, I'm an 80s kid so this book obviously pushed all the right buttons for me.
I find that there was a perfect balance of mystery, adventure, humour, and romance in this novel. While I like Susan, the main protagonist, I loved Merlin for his zany persona. As I finished the novel, I do think the title was a l ...more

was disappointing primarily because it's by the author of the Abhorsen series. I'm giving it 3 stars, but rounded up from 2.5, and in my opinion, it doesn't really measure up to those books. I did like the concept of the left-handed and right-handed booksellers (who have different powers); but the characters seemed secondary to the action somehow, at the same time that some of the action was confusing. I admit I have issues when the rules of a fictional magical world aren't clear to me, so perh

This was a fun magical adventure set in 1980s London. The characters are interesting and different and the world has a lot of possibilities. The amount of magical battle details was a little more than I enjoy, but if you like to read about them, they were done well. The story itself was a bit thin, but it held my attention and was OK for setting up the world and characters. I will add the next in the series to my wish list.
