A very interesting book. The portrayal of different societies and characters is as relevant today as when it was written. I initially found the holiday in Florence particularly fascinating, as most of the holiday makers had put themselves in an environment where they were surrounded by people very similar (if not the same) as those they knew at home. It is not that the Emerson's are particularly worthy, just that they are different, and this mixture of classes and the tension it creates leads to

I enjoyed this quite a lot, although I had the problem of not being able to see any other faces or hear any other voices for the characters except those from the movie. I think this is one case where I'm glad I'd seen the movie first, though. I'm not sure I would have enjoyed the book as much as I did if I had read it first. I think the movie did a great job of bringing the book to life - even though the version I saw was an edited version at my university's international cinema.

While I ultimately enjoyed the story, the book was a bit too much of a slog for me to say I really liked it.
Read for Modern British Novel class. Memorable romantic little read that contrasts Italian and British life
