As the first installment of the LofR trilogy this book sets out the world of Middle Earth in immense detail, occasionally to the detriment of the overall story. The world Tolkien creates is well thought out and is only slightly let down by his writing style which can get a bit much at times. The story is a fantastic tale of bravery and fantasy and sets the reader on their way through a magical, fictious yet incredibly real world of hobbits, auks, and wizards.
