More of a 3.5 stars. Quite a good book really, but reader's perspective clouded it.
This is the first comtemporary YA for me in a while and it's a nice break from space adventure.
Quentin is likable and his gangs are funny. The last section of the book made me laugh out loud at various places. The book remind me of Sarah Dessen but with more gags and boy's perspective. Quintin Jacobsen and Margo Roth Spiegelman have been neighbors since childhood. Now, they are about to graduate high school. The thing is Quentin has been in love with his neighbor since they were little, but they went there separate ways after discovering a dead body when they were kids. I am a professed John Green fan. This book has the tell tale characteristics, the teens are so wrapped up in their own lives that adults hardly figure into the story as characters at all. But John Green reminds us that teens have full, deep, rich, complicated personal lives and the whole "coming of age" thing isn't as easy as it looks, especially for Margo, who really struggles with where she belongs. the beginning of this book is fast and fabulous but it loses it in the middle only to come back together towards the end. Not my favourite John Green novel but still worth the read
