This re-read was just as wonderful this time around.
Full disclosure: I am a life-long Tolkien geek. Mock me, and I'll cuss you out in Elvish. And then I'll breathe a bit of fire at you.
This is the prequel to The Lord of the Rings. I actually read LOTR first when I was 9 years old (back when dinosaurs walked the earth...) and it was rough going, so I highly recommend reading The Hobbit first. I listened to this audiobook with my five-year-old son during some long car rides. He's a Tolkien fan -- He's already heard the story told, then the book read aloud, then watched the cartoon version of the movie. He dressed up as Smaug for Halloween one year. He built a complicated Lego model of Bilbo's house. So he was familiar with the story. We enjoyed listening to this production. I remember trying to read this when I was a kid and stopping a little over a chapter or so into it. At the time I thought it was boring. I am not sure if I couldn't relate to the "fantasy" world or the lack of female characters. So I gave this book another go at the age of 29. I have seen the movie. This time around, I was much more impressed. The beginning was hilarious and engaging and charming. It felt like a story that was dying to be read out loud and one to read to children. I was surprise
