THIS. WAS. SO. SATISFYING.
I cannot overstate how much I wish I had never read book 2 until I had this in my hands to immediately continue on to. Book 2 left me furious and disappointed, but this was exactly the resolution it needed.
I love Janet so much. I was so glad we got bits from her POV and I live for how unapologetic she is about who she is and who she isn't. I'm so fucking glad Alice is back, and while I think the "healed by bacon and sex" thing is a little much, I liked it. I was rooti ...more

Once again this feels less gritty than the first in the series but on the up side Quentin was less annoying than in the second in the series. Here we find Quentin back on Earth teaching at the magic college of Brakebills and trying to find his way back to Fillory. In doing so he finds himself part of a magic heist that includes a student he had helped but who was subsequently expelled. I had the best time reading this book! It had some scary parts and it had some pretty heavy self-reflection going on, but then there were paragraphs like the one toward the beginning which described the library's problem with autonomous books who are breeding and creating some unsavory new editions. This book was absolutely my favourite of the three. It was just so good. I never wanted it to end and I wish there was a fourth. It seems like Grossman is FINALLY coming into his own as a writer, Quentin finally became a character I was interested in listening to, and we are finally getting the perspectives of some of the other characters for once. And we get to see more of Fillory!!!

By the time I got to the final installment of the Magicians trilogy, I came to expect that the first half of the story was never as interesting as the second half, but it's a necessary evil to set up the epic latter half of the book, so I tolerate it.
The same was true of this book. I hated the beginning, waiting for Quentin to snap out of that depression that never seems to go away, but when he finally does, the story, as usual, gets pretty epic and is worth the wait.
