I truly dislike giving a Maggie Stiefvater book anything lower than a 4 but I had to do it with this one.

Hopefully one day when I re-read it I might change my mind on what I thought but as of right now it sort of disappointed me. Now, don't get me wrong, this is one of the most different and exciting ideas for a book I have read about in a long time but as for it gripping me, it really didn't and I REALLY wanted it to.

As for what disappointed me about it, it had a lot to do with the fact that it felt jumpy. I love Maggie's way of writing and some of the sentences she strings together has painted the most colourful images in my mind to date, but it felt like in this book that it went from one place to the next and the characters sometimes seemed way too far gone in their mind than I thought they would be. The only time it was appropriately jumpy was at each POV because then I knew that the scenes and perspectives would change.

Also, the whole ley line and Glendower thing popped up out of no where. I know there was a brief description in there somewhere about what they were all about, but I felt like it needed a huge description because now that I have finished the book I am still a little iffy on what exactly it is all about. As for the characters, Maggie always makes them the most interesting and I had clear images in my head of how they all should look to me and each of their personalities stood out and not one of them blended together, they had cohesion in the same task but they all stood on their own.

I really thought that this book would drag me in and I could lose myself in it, but I just couldn't. Some parts were great and others fell flat with me. I can judge this books merits on how quickly I read it, and I don't think 'months' is a very good merit in my book. I do look forward to reading the next book in the hopes that I feel more enlightened and to hopefully get some clarity on how the bloody hell the first book ended and so I can actually understand it.

All in all, it was a wonderful idea for a book but I think it might need another go for me to truly see if my perspective changes. I still recommend it to be read at the end of the day :) ...more
