I have had this book for so long, but never gotten to reading it. I don't know why, other than the fact that I owned it. My friends laughingly refer to the books that I own as my "orphans" as I am always reading a myriad of library books while my own books gather dust on a shelf. I would give it 5 because it was like nothing I've ever read, and the writing style was great, but I feel like for my personal taste, I would give it 4 just because I get really bored with survival/adventure/wilderness stories. So, my giving 4 stars to a book of that type is really saying a lot about what Suzanne Collins can do!

And this future is kind of scary because the Hunger Games are a way for the controlling government of the twelve districts to entertain and scare its people. Each district picks one boy and one girl to represent them in the games. And these representatives need to survive...literally the one left alive is the winner.

Katniss Everdeen is a sixteen-year old and decides to take the place as representative for her district instead of letting her little sister (the one originally chosen) do it. Now, Katniss and Peeta ( a boy she has always felt a need to pay back because of a nice deed he did when they were children) are representing District 12.

Wow, what a book. I wasn't so sure about this one from the start because of all the hype around it. But, the book really did live up to it all. The Hunger Games provides so much action and emotional aspects for the reader that it really can be for all types of readers.

It is filled with action, but the characters are so wonderful and well written. We get Katniss, a wonderful heroine, who is willing to die for her family. She loves her sister so much and it really is beautiful to read a story about such a strong family bond. And then there is Peeta (it took me awhile, but I eventually got the whole Peeta name...pita bread and his dad's a baker...was that on purpose?) He is a sweet kid and thought provoking, that it makes you wonder how he'll survive in the "games." Lastly, there is Gale...the sweet friend that has always been there for Katniss and promised to help look out for her mother and sister. From the get-go, he was my guy. Now I wonder what will happen throughout the series...who does she choose? Does she choose anyone?

I absolutely loved this book and totally recommend it to everyone. This book is getting so much praise and YES it really does deserve all of the wonderful praise! Go get it and be prepared to be surprised a the end of almost every chapter...you won't be able to put it down!!! ...more

I have waited until I finished the series to write my review of the Hunger Games. From early on in 2009, the Hunger Games was everywhere. I managed to stay in the dark on the content of the story, which I think was the best way to experience it. The only thing I really knew is that there was a kick-ass young girl as the heroine. I'm always a sucker for these types of stories so that was more than enough to go to the top of my TBR list.

I have waited until I finished the series to write my review of the Hunger Games. From early on in 2009, the Hunger Games was everywhere. Since it was so big, I also waited until after the release of Mockingjay to start reading. I have found with my love of series, that it becomes increasingly difficult to hang on for a incomplete series, because by the time the next book comes out I want a refresher, and frequently end up re-reading.
I started The Hunger Games on a vacation, which was an excellent place to read it, because it was so engrossing from the moment I started. If I had started it during a normal day, I'm not sure much "living" I would have done besides eating and cat naps! :)
Katniss Everdeen is a 16 year old girl. She and her family reside in the twelve district in what remains of North America. The "Capitol" is the governing force that basically forces all districts into submission by holding a lottery of sorts gladiator battle to the death between the district's children as a way to keep them in line. Even more dispicably, they televise the event.
That is enough to know that this story packs a wallop. Children forced into killing other children, served up as faux entertainment and used as a tool for a dominating power. Katniss, though only 16 has been exercising the role of parent in her household. Her mother is unstable following her father's death in a mining accident. On Reaping Day, which is the day that the children are picked for "The Hunger Games"; Katniss' sister Prim is chosen as the female child for district 12. Katniss immediatly volunteers to take her younger sister's place.
What follows is an epic journey with Katniss in the Hunger Games. I won't say much except that the story was heartbreaking, tragic and extremely resonating. Stand out moments are with Rue and Katniss' moments with Peeta, the other contestant from her district. I will continue the review with the next book... ...more

This book had already gotten a lot of hype before I read it, so my expectations were high. Fortunately it lived up to my high hopes and I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the trilogy. When I first heard of this book from a friend,I was very confused. She had nothing but praise for it, but when I asked her what it was about, she described to me, what seemed to be to be a grousome and violent novel of kids killing each other to earn fame and fortune. I was suprised to find out that many of my calm, non-violent, anti-war, anti-violence friends had read this book also and loved it.
