In this futuristic dystopian society, an unnamed apocalypse has wiped out all of North America. Rising from the ashes is one nation called Panem, which is comprised of 13 Districts surrounding the Capitol, the seat of power and government. Well, there were 13 Districts, until those districts rebelled against the abusive government - and lost. In retaliation, Panem Central obliterated District 13, and in the treaty that followed, established the annual hunger games, in which each district was req ...more

District 12 was the coal mining district, the scarcity of food made it difficult to support her family (mother and younger sister, Prim). With only the meager rations allotted to them, Katniss Everdeen and her friend Gale Hawthorne regularly took to the forest to hunt, even though it was against the law. Her father had taught her the basics of surviving off the land and trading before he died and with Gales help, she was able to build her skills. Every year there was a reaping day, and that day ...more

I have had this book for so long, but never gotten to reading it. I don't know why, other than the fact that I owned it. My friends laughingly refer to the books that I own as my "orphans" as I am always reading a myriad of library books while my own books gather dust on a shelf. If you are like me and tend to let your owned books languish, and this is one of the books, I urge you to read it! Now! This book was fantastic. A friend of mine likened this book to "a cross between The Running Man and ...more

I know I'm a little late to this party...but what an awesome book! I didn't think this would be up my alley but I read in a single-sitting, unable to put it down. I can't wait to get my hands on the 2nd and 3rd book. I know what I am doing this weekend! ...more

This book puts our familiar reality-type television into a pretty terrifying future. And this future is kind of scary because the Hunger Games are a way for the controlling government of the twelve districts to entertain and scare its people. Each district picks one boy and one girl to represent them in the games. And these representatives need to survive...literally the one left alive is the winner.

Katniss Everdeen is a sixteen-year old and decides to take the place as representative for her di

This book had already gotten a lot of hype before I read it, so my expectations were high. Fortunately it lived up to my high hopes and I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the trilogy. Katniss Everdeen is a teenager living in the desolate future . When her sister is picked to participate in the annual Hunger Games, Katniss volunteers to save her life by taking her place in the Games. After training, she and Peeta, the other "Tribute" chosen from her district compete in the fight-to-the ...more

When I first heard of this book from a friend,I was very confused. She had nothing but praise for it, but when I asked her what it was about, she described to me, what seemed to be to be a grousome and violent novel of kids killing each other to earn fame and fortune. I was suprised to find out that many of my calm, non-violent, anti-war, anti-violence friends had read this book also and loved it. It took me a while to finaly pick up this book, but when I eventually did, I could not put it down ...more
