I can’t believe how much I enjoyed this book; I just could not put it down. It had me hooked from the moment it began, and at the time I had no idea what I was getting into. All I knew was that the cashier at Chapters was adamant that I should read these books especially after the selection I was purchasing, and then there are the occasional reviews I would see pop up in my Goodreads feed. Apparently many people enjoyed this book, so I thought “alright, let’s give it a go”.

Just the idea of this book pushes it to a 3 before I even begin to rate it. It kind of reminded me of Survivor. Except, in Survivor they don’t kill each other. Briefly, the story is about Katniss, who voluntarily replaces her sister when she is chosen to represent District 12 in the Hunger Games. Every year, a boy and a girl from the age 12 to 18 from each district is chosen from a lottery to participate in the games. They are put in an “area” where they hunt each other. The last one to survive, ...more

Wow, reading this one on your kindle makes it difficult to believe when you've hit the end. I kept tapping on the right, trying to make it to the next page/chapter. At least with the actual book in your hands you know the end is coming. Am I ever glad that I have all three books here. I think I'd be mighty annoyed if I read this when it first came out and found out that I had to wait for the next book to be finished. What a love story cliffhanger!

At first I found the story a little hard going.

I raced through this book, and really enjoyed it. Am glad I didn't find out it was YA before I bought it (still can't overcome the feeling that I shouldn't be reading books for younger readers)! There were moments where I began to think that it was a bit overdrawn, but as entertainment it was great! And I am looking for the next one in the series.... ...more

I really enjoyed this book. I got straight into it, and then read the next two in the series (luckily I liked it, because I'd optimistically bought them before starting this one). It's nice to break out of the mould of 'orphan boy with amazing gift/ability' and have a strong female character who has earned her skills and talents. ...more

I resisted reading this book because of all the hype. Seriously, a book about reality TV gone apocalyptic? No, thanks. But, after hearing SO much about the book (and its sequels), I finally broke down. I fully expected to find this book pathetic and the heroine a whining, simpering idiot, like Bella from Twilight, but hooray, I was wrong!
The premise of the book was horrifying, but I loved that the characters were proactive, and I loved how this book threw hard questions and impossible decisions

Katniss Everdeen lives in a post-apocalyptic North America called Panem which is ruled by a capitol with 12 districts. Every year 2 tributes from each district are sent to the hunger games in a fight to the death. Katniss volunteers to take her sister Prim's place in the Hunger Games and is sent with Peeta Mellark, the bakers son. The book does a good job of setting up the land and once the games got started I couldn't put the book down. I'm looking forward to reading the next two books in the s ...more

Read it in one setting, couldn't put it down as far as story-telling goes. I didn't give it a 5 though just because it reminded me of too many other plots, like Lord of the Flies, or more specifically, a short story I read a long time ago called "The Most Dangerous Game." Really dark and pretty disturbing for a YA novel, but infinitely better than Twilight. :) Friends are encouraging me to continue the series, so we will see. ...more

Sorry, but I didn't love this book at all. Dystopian usually not my genre and this book was so highly recommended, I gave it a chance. Struggled just to finish it. I am not sure if I will read the rest of the series. ...more
