First off want to say how great it was to read a novel set in Ireland, even if it was Dublin….. !!!! What? I hear you say? Well, I am from the West of Ireland and there is a thing in Ireland about folks outside the Pale and the Dubs …. Especially when it comes to sport. You have your “ABU’s” in the world of footie (that’s soccer to you folks over the pond) and then in Ireland you have your “ABDs”. I’ve lost you haven’t I? An “ABU” is Anyone But United – i.e. those who do not support Manchester U ...more
5 Brilliant... Uncommon...Unconventional Stars....
Once upon a time there was a cupcake baker name Freda. She lived with her roommate, Nora, in a not so classy apartment in Dublin.
“I might not have a boyfriend, but I have cupcakes, and those tasty bastards haven't let me down yet.”
Yes... She was a smart, funny, and sexy lady with pathological self-deprecation that she believed in an incurable condition.

One of my favorite books this year is Still Life with Strings. I sat down yesterday and realized I was missing that feeling the book gave me, so naturally I got another book by the same author. I read Painted Faces in one sitting. I’m just in awe at how beautiful this author’s stories are.
In Painted Faces, we meet Fred and Viv… and really, aren’t these the best character names ever?! Fred is short for Freda, our heroine. She’s running home from work soaked to the bone when she bumps into her new ...more

5 Refreshingly Unconventional Stars!
"We all paint on a face to show the world...For some of us, that's quite literal."

The first time I heard about Painted Faces, I wasn't sure if I was open-minded enough to give it a try. But one thing caught my attention in reviews, and that was 'HILARIOUS HEROINE', so I added it to my TBR pile, thinking someday. When a bunch of my GR friends planned a Buddy Read, I took a deep breath and dived right in. And I was blown away. Unconventional, highly ...more

"I like to be a man in the bedroom, but a woman on the stage." --Nicholas
Painted Faces is one of the most refreshing story I have ever read. A very unique one, I could rarely find a book that has the same plot..or should I say it's my first time reading this kind of story. A main character as a drag queen? It's kind of weird to imagine. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against drag queens but I'm used to read books that has the usual male character. My weird feelings for this story ...more
