Shelves: audiobook, horror

I found this story and its audio book production very engaging and powerful. It does have some gruesome parts, which make it just that much more impactful. It addresses areas of how we treat each other, human capacity for cruelty, and human weaknesses in various forms. It's got good villains that you want to strangle and a complex, nuanced protagonist you want to try to talk to through the pages so they don't go into an abyss.

Brom’s storytelling and he has mastered the art of manipulating the reader’s emotions. The ups and downs in this book read like an erratic heart rhythm except the descending tempo and travesties in Abetha’s struggle continue to plummet right off the page and resuming at a deeper depth to chart her continuing despair and misfortune.

This is a brilliant book, but it’s a challenge to get through. If you want happy and inspiring, don’t look for it here. Seems like every time the sun is going to come ...more
